I think there are essentially two broad subcategories of music. One that makes you want to run along with it, shaking the world and leaving you thrilled and breathless in its wake. And there is the other which bores through your soul, permeating it in a deep trance... and you could dance forever.
The Black Keys definitely falls into the latter group. I have Robert Lasley (from the Systematics and Ecology lab) to thank for introducing me to this band. Although they consist only of a guitarist and a drummer... the music they make is terribly soulful and (i daresay.. erotic?). Makes you want to breathe it like a drug. I remember listening to them from Rob's labtop while both of us were working on our specimens in the wet lab. Here's one of my favourite songs:

Other bands which produce extremely soul-permeating music are Nirvana (at its peak in the 1980s - 1990s) and Panthera (with its evergreen metal hit - Cemetary gates). I am still looking for a Japanese band which makes music to this effect. Most of the J-rock/ J-metal bands I have listened to fall into the first category.
*Disclaimer: Not saying that one category is superior to the other... Chalk and cheese ;-) they're just different and I believe everyone needs a balance of both vis a vis situational context).*
Music is made up of a intricate blend of words and melody. Words touch the spirit. The melody touches the soul. When it comes down to it all, what would I do without music? Makes me want to take up the guitar and not look back.
