The Return Of Mamet

Dec 09, 2009 21:19

David Mamet is back baby! Two years after his hilarious play 'November' the renowned playwright returns with 'Race' which opened a couple of days ago on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Controversial as always, Mamet deals with issues of race. The title is self-explanatory.

The cast was exceptional as well. It seems that all huge Broadway names rush at Mamet's beckoning. In 2007 he had Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf in 'November'. Now he has James Spader, Kerry Washington, David Alan Grier and Richard Thomas in 'Race'. Pretty good, no? Last year he had 'Speed-The-Plow' which didn't get much recognition. But 'Race' seems like it'll make up for it!

Mamet is one of those playwrights that you're either going to love, or hate. He's misogynistic, brazen and even vulgar. Personally, I love him. His work always pushes the boundaries of what is socially acceptable and I tip my hat to him for doing it. Sure people get offended. But then again people get offended if you wish them "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays". Quick! Someone call the FCC!! His work is ingenious. I really cannot wait to watch/read 'Race'. I love 'Glengarry Glen Ross' and can't stop reading 'November'! He and Tom Stoppard are my favorite contemporary playwrights and I always get excited when they write something new!
