I was really looking forward to last night. I really was. I got really comfy, had some snacks and sat back for the show to begin. Nothing however, prepared me for the travesty that was to follow. And I mean nothing. I am of course talking about the "Emmy Awards 2009: Sobfest To The Max".
Why I didn't like them you ask?? I'll tell you. Let me start from the beginning.
First of all: Neil Patrick Harris. Don't get me wrong. I think he's utterly adorable, a hilarious actor and did a great job yesterday. But he was also the host at this year's Tony awards. Couldn't they find someone else who hasn't recently hosted another major award ceremony?? Granted, the Tony's sucked this year, but this year's shows were mainly at fault, not Neil. When I watch a series, movie special or award ceremony I do expect some originality, and that includes seeing someone who hasn't hosted before. I have to admit though, that the opening song "Put Down The Remote" was very amusing. I liked the Tina Fey reference and really LOL'ed at the "She can turn a gay straight. Oh wait, never mind" line!! And the line about Paula Abdul was hilarious.
Ok, so I haven't been persuasive as to why I didn't like the show, but I'll get there. I'm less likely to persuade you now that I'm going to tell you that I found the set changes fantastic. But let's get to the important stuff: the winners.
We start off with Supporting Comedy Actress. And the winner is...Kristin Chenoweth! I have to admit I was ecstatic about her win! She's so so so damn cute! And her portrayal of Olive on 'Pushing Daisies' was great. As much as I love Jane Krakowski, I think Kristin deserved this. Jane will get her chance next year, since her show hasn't been canceled.
Comedy writing? Ok, who didn't see that one coming. Comedy Supporting Actor: Jon Cryer. WHAT THE WHAT??? The 'Three and A Half Men' guys are still around?? Why is that show still on the air?? OK, deep breaths, deep breaths. Next up Lead Actress in A Comedy. Ah, yes. The excitement is building...
"And the Emmy goes to... *come on Tina, come on Tina*... Toni Collette????
I don't remember her speech or how Tina took her loss as I was still recovering from fainting, banging my head on the table and landing in a big bowl of 'What just happened?' Toni Collette?? SERIOUSLY??? What are they putting in the water over there??
Comedy Directing: The Office. Thank God it won something. I love that show and think that it's been royally snubbed all these years. How is it that Steve has never won an Emmy? I mean before Alec there was Tony Shalhoub who won all the time. He was good, but he wasn't THAT good. Lead Comedy Actor: Alec Baldwin. Well, duh. I really shouldn't say that because we all thought Tina would win and look at how that turned ot. I'm very very happy he won. Well deserved! Aaand he looked gorgeous in his lavender tie! PLUS the kiss with Tina was smoking! Oh hotness impersonated, thy name is Alec Baldwin!
Moving on. Some reality award. Another reality award. Ok, I'm bored. But wait! What's this?? A category I've been waiting for!! Lead Actor in a Movie or Miniseries! Yes! One of three guys I'm supporting has to win, right?? Kenneth Branagh was breathtaking as 'Wallander', Kevin Kline was hilarious and moving as 'Cyrano' and Ian McKellen was well, superb to say the least, as 'King Lear.' So, whom of these fine actors won? NONE!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?? SERIOUSLY, CAN YOU F-ING BELIEVE THAT? Who the hell is Brendan Gleeson?? He certainly couldn't have been better than these actors...
At this point I grabbed a pillow to muffle my screams of anguish and desperation. But wait. Here comes Direction for a Variety. Jimmy of Chuck have to win for TCR or TDS right? Wrong. Again. Variety Writing: TDS. I was happy ok. Even though I would have preferred if TCR had won because I was sure TDS would also take home the Emmy for Best Variety Show, which they did. 7th year in a row! What a feat! Johnny Stew must be very proud! At least TCR can win for Original Music and Lyrics for it's Christmas Special. I mean with songs like "The Little Dealer Boy' and '(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding' how can it NOT win? You can't make these things up. It really was 'The Greatest Gift of All'. But no. The Emmy judges didn't seem to agree and gave the Emmy to the stupid Oscar people. I didn't even know people still watched the Oscars! BTW, if Hugh Jackman wasn't singing in all his manly sexiness, I doubt that song would have won...
I forgot to mention some of the presenters. First of all, one of the men I loathe the most, Mr. Jimmy Fallon. The man is un-talented and un-funny, why does he still have his own show? He wasn't funny on SNL and he isn't funny now. I absolutely loved Kevin Kline's look to Jimmy's... ummm presenting? Singing? Whatever the hell it was he was doing (or trying to do). And then we have Ricky Gervais. I still haven't made up my mind if I like him or not. Sometimes I do and other times I want to poke a fork in my eye and burn my ears off just to avoid watching and listening to him. Yesterday I couldn't decide. He started off being funny. Then had to poke fun at Steve Carell. Again. And comment on 'The Office'. Again. Ok, we get it. You wrote 'The Office'. You're a comic genius. What else do you want? Stop busting our chops and rubbing our faces in it. Jeez. I did like the comment about Hollywood actors VS TV actors. The look on Kevin Kline and Tom Hanks' face was priceless!
Wait a minute. Where's the dynamic presenting duo of Colbert/Stewart? Are they not going to present?? But, they're the best part of the Emmy's every year! You have GOT to be kidding me! No onstage sobbing? No leaf blower? No onstage consumption of prunes?? Who on earth was in charge of organizing the awards this year??
Now the big categories. Drama Lead Actor. It has to be Hugh. 'House' is fantastic (even it's been taking the downhill the past year) and Hugh is flawless in his portrayal of the snarky doctor. I'd also be ok if Gabriel Byrne or Jon Hamm won. Mainly because they're extremely hot! Ok, now I'm pissed. Bryan Cranston? COME ON!!!!!!! Last award, Best Drama. If 'House' doesn't win tonight, it never will. It's ship has sailed. And the award goes to 'Mad Men'.
I turn off the TV and blankly stare at the screen. Can this have actually happened? Are the Gods of Television and Creative Arts drunk and high? Surely it must be a dream. A good night's sleep and everythibg will be rosy in the morning. but Alas, it was not a dream. This fiasco DID actually happen. I think television died a little last night. And so did the minuscule of appreciation the audience had for the Emmy's.
