chris benoit & nancy "woman" benoit r.i.p.
the world is a sick and scary place sometimes. they were found slain along with (i believe theirs, he may have been from another marriage) their 7 year old son yesterday afternoon.
chris benoit was one of my favorite wrestlers. i believe he was the last truly great working technical wrestler in existance. as a long time on-and-off wrestling fan, i can sadly state that this is one of the greatest losses to the industry ever.
the canadian crippler, rabid wolverine... he (accidentally) broke sabu's neck. he looked great in every promotion he was ever in. from mexico, to japan, canada to the USA, he was a phenomenonal talent. he was too tough to fix his knocked out teeth, and he probably had the best body of any 40 year old man, anywhere. he was a proficient mat wrestler, a submission specialist, and had some nice arial moves as well. his character was a stoic bad-ass, and some thought his lack of acting hindered his getting over big. but he seemed too real a person to lay on heavy histrionics or fakery. he had too much class to participate in the "vince is dead" angle. the interviews and the match that preceeded the late great eddie guerrero's death that he did participate in are the only ones that brought me to tears, such was his sincerity. the overall integrity that chris benoit brought to wrestling cannot be overstated.
his wife, known better a woman, the ex-wife of kevin sullivan who left sullivan in angle (wcw) and in life for chris benoit, may be remembered by some of my lj friends as sandman's valet woman, weilder of kendo canes and wearer of sequin evening gowns when other valets were going for a more contemporary look and role. she was a terrific valet, an old-school troublemaker but above it all, a lady.
it's pretty fucking surreal and atrocious. since it looked like they were gonna give benoit the ecw belt, i was hoping once i heard about this that this was a bad angle, fodder for tasteless jokes. but that it's true? how awful and gruesome and heartbreaking.
i'm still stunned. not to mention, i'm still in some amount of shock from the death of sensational sherri. but fuck. almost an entire family (two other children were not in the house at the time, ostensibly with other family or parent from a former marriage) slain in the night. i mean, there's just so much gory speculation, i feel awful doing it. but there you go... murder suicide? execution?
tragic, random, sad.
*edit* many outlets report that it indeed looks like chris benoit murdered his wife and child before taking his own life monday. the wwe are disassociating themselves from him and focusing on the family. after taking the time slot slated for stupid fake vince macmahon is dead bullshit and alloting it to a chris benoit tribute...
even if he did it, chris benoit is still dead. it just makes this all the more bizarre and tragic.
