Since I know a few of you are probably curious, here are the responses the penguins "wrote" to the first graders. I submitted them to the Comm department for approval but will hopefully be able to get them in the mail his week.
The teacher included a note and said it'd be nice if I could "respond to a few." Now, c'mon. You can't not write to all of them, especialy if you saw all the adorable pictures and handwriting. If you were a six-year-old wouldn't you be completely thrilled to get a letter from a penguin?!
Besides, making the connection with kids is what's important ... and a whole lot of fun. :)
Oh, I would have done the same thing re: replying to all of them. Getting that wholehearted appreciation from kids is, well, a lot more satisfying than trying to please grownups. ;)
I think it would have been amazing to get a letter from a penguin. My first grade class was clearly not cool enough to organize us writing them letters.
I would love to be a fly on the wall in the classroom if the question of how a penguin holds a pencil DOES come up.

*dittoes this* It's wonderful that the zoo would go out of its way to make friends with a bunch of kids on behalf of the penguins :)

Now *I* want to come see the penguins!
