We had our surgery lab practical exam today. This is something we all have to pass before we get into real surgeries next week. That's really soon! We had to demonstrate knowledge in certain areas pertaining to surgery. We had to perform a subcuticular pattern and tie off a bleeder with hand ties in front of one of the surgeons. There were a few stations which required us to write down answers regarding: anesthesia (including some calculations), instrument identification, and midline anatomy. The last station involved gowning, gloving, and draping a "patient" aseptically. This was done under the scrutiny of the junior surgery technicians. I did all right on all the stations except the bleeder tying part. oh well. i need to practice those.
Next week: actual surgery!
