She shows up by his door late at night. Shelter, she begs, not waiting for his answer before rushing inside. He doesn’t have much to offer besides a pillow and a blanket; for the next three hours his sofa becomes her bed, the most comfortable she’s had in a month.

Before sunrise she’s already up - he hasn’t slept at all. He gives her an apple, asks if she has enough food, she tells him not to worry. He kisses the back of her hand; they share a smile.

Later Nadia would tell him she’d been just a little bit jealous.

He isn’t surprised to find her unrecognizably blonde in a bar, but when she doesn’t run away after his approach. He is even more surprised when she lets him take her to the dance floor, shouting make me happy over the throbbing music. He does, and he does it well, spinning and grabbing and pulling and thrusting and caressing until they are both blissfully exausted.

When morning comes he is naked, alone and there are 200 dollars missing in his wallet. Son of a bitch, he groans, but on the next second he’s laughing out loud and shaking his head.

When they meet again, in the hospital broom closet, she is exactly the way he remembered her (wild dark hair, plain shirt, dirty pants) except for the ugly gash just above her left eyebrow. Still fixing?, she asks; still running?, he retorts.

He stitches her, sees to her sprained ankle, gives her painkillers and gauze and antiseptic. She ignores the ring on his left hand, whispering thank you against his gentle, warm lips.

One day I might not be able to fix you, he tells her. Then on that day I’ll stop running, she answers, wipes their tears and leaves.
