That hadn’t been their first kiss. It’d probably seemed to everyone - had probably seemed to Kate - that it had, but it hadn’t. Their first kiss had been back at the Barracks, a scared encounter of lips like every god damn first kiss had ever been and will ever be. Afterwards she looked at the floor and gave a little anguished laugh. He remembered wondering if every woman in the world would go crazy after kissing him. But she didn’t run away; that was a nice change.
That must have been their eighth kiss, or ninth. Maybe there were more, he wasn’t really keeping track. Two kisses in the Barracks, that first one and a good-night kiss, after making sure the cameras wouldn’t get them from that angle; a daring peck of lips on the way back to the beach, while he was on guard duty and the other two slept; one more after Claire got better, that night when he brought her oatmeal and they laughed together. Then there was the night when she confessed, and about that one he can’t say for sure. It’s hard to define when, exactly, one kiss ends and another one begins.
The thing is, that kiss on the way to the radio tower hadn’t been their first kiss. That was the first time they’d dare to kiss in front of everyone (“not the best time to undermine your leadership even more”, she’d told him upon her arrival at their camp), yes, and he admits it surprised him; but it hadn’t been their first kiss. Nor would it become their last kiss, though he had feared, he had feared so much that day (she said “don’t wait up” and it hurt).
But it had been a special kiss nonetheless. And that was why he kept remembering it. And that was why he missed her.
