When I'm 60..

Apr 13, 2003 20:07

My uncle is a 75 year old caustic Frenchman who has recently been taking part in nude anti-war protests (In one 750 naked women spelled out "No War" in his 250 men spelled out "peace, man") so of course, he and his wife are among my very favourite relatives. It was my aunt's 60th birthday this weekend and a gathering of the (extended, divorced, friends, step who cares!) clan. The relatives on that side of the family are crazy, fun and appropriately adoring of me. "Get out of the way!" one cousin I hadn't met yet shrieked at my father as she ran towards me and then clasped me to her bosom.

Highlights of the evening include:

    -
  • Dancing along to "I'd love to have a beer with Duncan" with a 60 year old Irishman.

    -
An extremly enthusiastic game of Binoche (? French game where you throw balls) on a team with drunken folk who kept insisting we form a "hutch" chant and give our opposition the evil eye

      -
    • A wonderful American ladies who'd walked a 2000 mile trail in six months on her own and who explained the secret meaning behind the song "Mellow Yellow" - Who'd have thought to do that with bananas?!

I can't remember a time when I've been around so many people with such joy.
