Century of the Fruitbat

I downloaded a Lauren Beukes novel for $2.99 on my brand-new Kindle Fire. It took a few minutes for it to show up, so I thought I'd flubbed it. Nope. I also thought other books would be cheaper on Kindle, but they're not, especially. It's also weird that you can't tell where you are in a book since you only see one page at a time. Am I in the middle? Near the end? How far am I from the denouement? You can usually get some idea of pacing by knowing how close to the end you are, since plot lines have to come together pretty freaking soon cuz there are only X pages left and with Y degree of complexity and Z number of characters, the author better get cracking. With a good book, I just about hate to get to those last couple of chapters because it's all going to be over soon. With a Kindle, you could get dropped off a cliff Any Second Now.

Edit: Ah. I accidentally figured out how to see how many pages there are in a book and how many you've read and what percentage of the book has been consumed.
