Banzai smart. Banzai know stuff too.

Someone in my household owns a two-wheeled vehicle that is brought into the yard each afternoon via a gate that's kept chained and padlocked (except during entry/exit) because Banzai knows how to lift the latch to open the gate. Opening the gate is fun! Banzai can run around and nobody can catch him! He's too fast! Too fast for you and too fast for you! Ha ha! Ha ha!

The routine is that the scooter comes in through the gate and is locked up to an object that would be very difficult to move without great personal risk. Then the scooter owner goes back to the gate, wraps the chain around the gate in a way that Banzai can't shake loose, and the chain is padlocked. The other day, though, the scooter was locked up while Banzai watched and its owner said, "Come on, Banzai! Let's go inside!" Banzai turned around, went over to the gate, rattled the chain that was hanging down, then looked back at the human, waiting. He knew what the routine was, and the gate gets locked. Can't fool Banzai! He stood and waited to make sure the gate was locked properly before he'd come into the house.

He was also an extremely good boy during a creek hike two days ago, apart from where we encountered a group of crusty punks with a dog and he wanted to fight it. I kept waiting for the crusties to dissolve in water. Only one of them was brave enough to risk it.
