I love the Eleventh Doctor. I think he may even be My Doctor (though of course I was skeptical I could love any Doctor more than Ten/Tennant).
But here's the thing.
I don't like ... River's role in the Doctor's life. I hate that she's the Doctor's wife. I hate that she was brought up to assassinate the Doctor. I hate... GAH! Like, I like River, in general. I would love SO MUCH MORE for her to have been the Doctor's daughter, the Doctor's sister, pretty much anything else.
The reason I despise her as the Doctor's love interest is that I simply don't feel the emotional investment AT ALL. It's like, oh, an episode with River, let's just throw some flirtation in there for kicks. Having chemistry with someone doesn't mean that you love them.
I bought Rose and the Doctor. Heck, I even ship Rose with the Eleventh Doctor, and they've never been on screen together. But when you have a series regular building a constant/normal relationship, that is SO MUCH MORE BELIEVABLE, something that I can invest in. River's relationship with the Doctor is just so gimmicky, and I feel like it's only such an important role/character because Moffat's a huge Alex Kingston fan.
And honestly that's another reason I don't love River. I don't feel the whole Alex Kingston is the be-all, end-all of awesome. I just don't.
But... I mean, I don't know.
I totally ship Doctor/Reinette, and that was only one episode - "The Girl in the Fireplace" - but it felt real, not merely capitalizing on the fun, flirty banter between two characters/actors.
Dude, how much cooler would it have been if River were the Doctor's younger sister who was born after he left Galifrey and before the Time War, this sister he never had any idea about because he didn't keep up his ties with home, and then she just goes chasing after this brother she hears all the stories about? Ugh! That would've been so much cooler!
Instead, I just have to deal with her being married to the Doctor. Sigh sigh sigh.
