this is a rather long photo update so let me give some info in case you don't feel like clicking. i don't think that i ever wrote about the trip before. basically we worked at two different houses in kentucky. one was a trailer that needed new skirting around the bottom and some flooring done inside and the other was a trailer that needed new front doors. we finished our work early so on the last day we stayed at the settlement and did a bunch of odds and ends for them.
the way Henderson works is that church groups pick a project and then they pay for the supplies that are needed for that project. Henderson provides room and board and gets all the supplies. then the groups go down there for a week and work. they also provide fun activities and discussions where you learn about the settlement and the community, including jeopardy, complete with the "redneck games" (that'll be in the next entry, a much shorter one entitled "fun").
the skirting process...it's really just siding only we put it in vertical and we have to cut it to fit

so we took this photo with us in the wrong order, the ground was slanted so i look like a midget (roger is very tall and this just made it worse, hehe)
inside the living room the floor had rotted because of a leak in the roof (they are on the list to get a new roof)
another room needed tile put down
the old skirting that was all rusty and made out of who knows what
hey look! all that hauling i did in americorps finally came in handy! :-P
the new skirting was very white and the front of the house was rather green because of the trees...so karen decided that she wanted to clean it off and it looked great when she finished:
unfortunately we had to put the old rusty vents back in the skirting (i dont know if henderson wouldnt pay for vents or if the guy doesnt really need the vents but he wants them, i dont know)
we were putting an access door, really a removable piece of skirting here so he could get underneath the house if he needed to
the other house
Patti and Jessie
cutting soup labels which we did for at least 2 hours and it seemed like we got nowhere...they have gotten a lot of vans because of the soup label collecting.
