killing two birds with one stone

so here's my update email, since i wanted to say pretty much the same thing on here:

I'm here at the library in Pensacola, FL. First things first and that is I will not be moving to a new county in FL, our team will be staying in Pensacola until the week of April 28th (I don't know which day exactly we're leaving because we have to drive back to Orlando before we flight out probably the next day).

So all the days sort of run together and I haven't been keeping really good track about what exactly we've been doing each day so I'll see what I can tell you guys.

I drove back to Pensacola on Monday the 28th. So we worked some more with RSVP last week (on Tuesday and Wednesday). We went around to a few more housing chopping up fallen trees and removing debris. On Thursday we started work in Escambia County with the local United Way chapter. And no surprise but it's about the same type of work because that's what needs to get done around here. So in the middle of the afternoon on Thursday it started torrential raining and didn't stop until at least 24 hours later. So we had to quit work early, but not before getting completely soaked. And then because of flash flooding we really couldn't go anywhere on Friday. Luckily our building didn't flood but we ran into a lot of flooding on the roadways. We had to leave around noon because they were opening a Red Cross shelter, so we went to help out with that. By the time the Red Cross got organized and we finally made it to the shelter (around 3 pm) there were only 12 or so people there. The original plan was to staff the shelter overnight and have two shifts. So a few of us left but then we ended up not having to come back at all because everyone found a place to stay.

On Saturday we worked a half day cleaning out someone's backyard. Then a few of us went and saw Sin City that night and it was awesome.

Then on Sunday we went to the Ronald McDonald House to get some ISP hours. We helped clean out the staff apartment on the bottom floor because it got flooded during all the crazy rain.

And that was about it for last week.

then for the beginning of this week. yesterday we split up and five of us are going around and doing the same stuff we've been doing while the other three try to quell the flood of paperwork at catholic charities. we went to 3 houses, cleaning out rooms, picking up bricks, and moving out ruined furniture.

today we were working with a group from london kentucky and we went to 5 houses, doing pretty much the same stuff. though at one house it was crazy because their entire front yard was a pile of cedar trees, so we cleaned that up, good thing cedar is a light wood. and then we went and checked out a sixth house that we will probably be at tomorrow.

and that's about it.

though concerning sin city...everyone should definitely see it. it was awesome, loved the color, loved the action...it was great!

florida, americorps, movies, rsvp, pensacola, disaster relief
