I LOVE YOU

Thursday 11 October 2012
Around 530pm

“Reid?” Luke called into the eerily quiet house. Leaving his suitcase next to the couch, he wandered further into the house searching for his boyfriend. He glanced into the empty kitchen, checked the office, both guest rooms and finally their bedroom and shower; he even peeked out the bedroom window into the backyard, still Reid was nowhere to be found.

Luke had missed Reid and was becoming more disappointed by the minute. He had been away on a business trip for Grimaldi Shipping for the last ten days. Luke had expected Reid to meet him at the airport but instead he found a company town car and driver waiting to take him home.

It wasn’t uncommon for Luke to return home to an empty house but usually if Reid was going to be late, either he or his assistant would call or at least text Luke and let him know. Checking his phone, he had no new messages.

He knew Reid had missed him. When Luke had called last night informing Reid that he would be home tonight, Reid said that he’d take a personal day Friday and they’d have the long weekend together. He said that he couldn’t wait to see Luke. So where was he? An emergency surgery? Maybe he had to work late today in order to take off all of Friday, which was normally his research day. No patients or consults, just Reid locked in his office with the latest medical books and journals, continuing his never-ending study of the brain and doing research for possible future surgeries.

This had been the longest separation that the two men had been through since they’d moved in together in March of last year. Early in their relationship, before living together, they’d hit a bumpy patch and had separated for two weeks, but they had worked through their misunderstandings and vowed to never spend that much time apart again. Now they tried to limit their separations to only two or three days; if their business trips and medical conferences were longer they made arrangements to accompany each other. Unfortunately this last trip to Malta had come up suddenly and Reid’s schedule was too busy to change at the last minute so Luke went alone, thinking he’d only be away for a couple of days. After ten days full of employee disputes, finalizing contracts, learning about recent changes in international shipping laws, ship-building delays and additional visits to Cartagena, Spain and London, England Luke was finally home.

The entire return flight from London had Luke making plans for what he wanted to do with Reid when he finally held him in his arms again. They had more than a week of lost time together to make up. Luke had hoped for welcome home kisses, an intimate dinner for two and to sleep off his jet-lag wrapped within Reid’s arms, followed by hours of passionate sex with his man.

As Luke sat down on the sofa, pondering what to do next, his cell phone alerted him to an incoming text.

Assuming you are now home. Take a shower to ease your jet lag. Wear the suit that’s hanging on the back of the bedroom door. Meet me at the farm. No questions. Love, Reid

His confusion increasing, Luke had to read the message twice. What the hell? Come to the farm? Wear a suit? No explanation? Didn’t Reid realize that Luke was tired and didn’t want to go anywhere but bed? It may only be early evening in Oakdale but Luke was still on European time so it felt closer to midnight and with the long flight Luke was tired! What was happening? Seriously? Luke tried calling Reid but his call went straight to voice mail.

“Dammit Reid! What is going on? Can’t you answer your damn phone?!” Luke asked as if Reid could hear him. Luke stood and angrily tossed his phone on the couch. It immediately beeped as another text arrived.

Please Luke, I’ll answer all your questions when you get here. Please follow the directions and come to me. Reid

Holy crap! Reid used the word ‘please’ twice?! That never happened. The only times Reid ever said please were when he didn’t want to attend yet another Snyder family holiday/wedding/seasonal/celebration-just-because-it’s-Tuesday event or if he really wanted something from Luke (usually sex-related). Taking a deep breath and releasing it, Luke knew he couldn’t refuse Reid. He walked towards the bedroom. Closing the door, he saw his dark blue suit, looking freshly dry-cleaned, along with a light blue button down shirt, hanging from the coat hook. Shaking his head with a slight smile he headed to the shower.

************

The sun was setting as Luke arrived at the farm. He noticed that the farmhouse was dark; the only light on was the outside porch light. Looking around Luke didn’t see any cars and knowing that Reid’s was parked in their garage, Luke’s confusion increased. He walked towards the house, hoping that Reid was inside waiting for him. Luke noticed a note attached to the door of the enclosed porch.

Meet me at the pond. Reid

Luke ran a hand through his hair, lightly tousling it and nodded before walking towards the path that would take him to the pond. Despite his trepidation, Luke found himself enjoying the brief walk. In the distance he could see the edge of the pond. The darkening sky was clear and the temperature was in the high-fifties, cool enough that one only needed a light jacket; Luke was quite comfortable in his suit coat.

Only a few of the trees still had their autumn colored leaves grasping their branches. Part of Luke’s enjoyment of the pond was the comfort and beauty provided by the surrounding trees throughout the seasons: the blossoms in the spring, the bountiful green leaves of summer, the colorful blaze of fall and even when the tree limbs bowed from the weight of winter snow. Somehow the transitional naked limbs seemed wrong, making Luke sad. He had mentioned this to Reid when they’d had a leisurely picnic dinner at the pond a week before his trip. Luke’s favorite part of that day had been at the end of the evening when they had sat, wrapped in each other’s arms, in silent thought, gazing at the pond surrounded by the trees with their vibrant red, orange and yellow leaves.

As the pond came into full view Luke saw Reid pacing back and forth in front of the wrought-iron and wooden bench located near the dock. After learning how much time Luke liked to spend at the pond, Reid had given him the bench as a Christmas gift last year. Luke loved that bench, especially the “L & R” etched into the top slat.

Luke smiled as he remembered receiving his gift. “If you insist on spending so much time out there, you should have a proper place to sit while you ponder all the absurdities of Oakhell. Plus this way you can save your clothes from further dirt and grass stains.” Luke had to bite his lip to stop himself from reminding Reid that it was usually during their make-out sessions that Luke’s clothing got stained; and not only with dirt and grass. He had just smiled, wrapped his arms around Reid and thanked him with a deep kiss.

“Reid?” Luke received no response when he called to Reid, who had stopped pacing and appeared to be lost in thought, staring at the pond. His left hand was tapping upon his thigh, making Luke wonder what he had to be nervous about.

“Reid.” Luke spoke again as he touched Reid’s shoulder, causing him to jump slightly before turning towards Luke. He was also dressed in a dark blue suit but with a white shirt, the top couple of buttons undone.

“Luke.” Reid walked into his embrace.

Their lips met in a light kiss before immediately growing in intensity. Both men were attempting to convey all the need, want and yearning of their separation. Love and desire combined as passion was quickly overtaking the kiss. Hands sought connection, hips moved forward, bodies melted together.

“Missed you.” Reid pulled back only enough to slowly kiss along Luke’s jaw line and down to the juncture of neck and shoulder. There he gently bit and lathed at his favorite spot, marking Luke as his.

“God, Reid.” Luke could barely speak as he was losing himself in the ardor of Reid’s kisses. His arms gripped Reid tighter, if that was even possible. “Why…are we…not doing this…at home…naked. Ahh.”

Luke turned so that their lips could connect yet again in another deep kiss. Reid took control of the kiss and slowed them down, calming the passion. He laid gentle kisses to Luke’s swollen lips before pulling away to stare into eyes so dark brown he felt he could drown in them. “Missed you.”

“I missed you too.” Luke kissed him again but Reid only allowed the one kiss. He pulled away slightly.

“I want to show you something.” He reached into a pocket and pulled out a small object and pushed a button. Suddenly Luke’s attention was captured by the illumination of a multitude of white lights. He turned his head in amazement to see that one by one all of the trees surrounding the pond had their limbs wrapped in miniature twinkling lights. He turned back to Reid, pure joy lighting his smile. “You did this?”

“Yeah. I had some help but…yeah. You said you hated the naked limbs, well now they’re covered in light.”

“Oh Reid. I love it. It’s so beautiful. The whole pond is lit up, the lights are reflecting off the water. Oh Reid thank you.” Luke kissed him again before resting their cheeks together to gaze upon the thousands and thousands of lights. Luke felt as if he was surrounded by stars.

After a few minutes Reid stepped out of Luke’s embrace and reached down to hold his hand. At Luke’s questioning gaze, Reid gave his hand a gentle squeeze.

“Come sit with me. I want to talk to you about something. And before your inner drama queen starts to panic, calm down, it’s nothing bad.” He chuckled and gave him a wink. “Actually I think you’ll like what I have to say.”

“Oh-kay.”

They sat upon the bench, angling their bodies so that they could easily face each other. Luke sat with both hands in his lap, he was feeling a bit anxious but told himself not to worry. Taking comfort in Reid’s words and soothing strength and knowing that he was loved by this wonderful man, he felt his nerves start to calm.
Reid laid one arm along the top slat, gently touching Luke’s shoulder, his other hand rose to caress Luke’s cheek. Crystal blue eyes stared into chocolate brown, conveying a shared love and happiness.

“You.” Reid said with a lopsided smile and a gentle shake of his head.

“Me?” Luke hesitantly bit his lower lip.

“Yes, you.” Reid lowered his hand from Luke’s face to firmly hold his hand. “You, Mr. Snyder have changed my life completely. My needs, my wants, hell, even who I thought I was. You’ve changed all that.” He saw Luke start to speak. “No, don’t you dare apologize. Yeah I know you, you were about to say ‘I’m sorry’ but you don’t need to. I regret nothing. I like the changes you’ve made in my life, they make me happy. You make me happy.” He lifted Luke’s hand to gently kiss it.

Sensing that Reid wasn’t finished speaking, Luke remained quiet.

“I thought I was happy with my life. I was, I was happy…content with the life I had. Yeah I was alone but I had my work and that was my priority. For so many years, starting in grade school when I first learned about the brain, my only goal in life was to be not just a neurosurgeon, but to be the best. Failure wasn’t an option, I had a goal and damn if it wasn’t going to happen. I didn’t need anything nor anyone else. I had my successful career, and if I had…shall we say, other needs,” he smirked, “that needed fulfillment, I had a few acquaintances that I could call, but no attachments. Relationships were messy and I had no need for that in my orderly life. And then, I met you.

“And everything changed?”

“Hell yeah, everything changed. Gone was my neat, orderly life that followed my every direction. All of my intended plans for the future flew out the window without so much as a see-ya-later. Suddenly, I found myself blackmailed, kidnapped and stuck in the middle of nowhere with my own personal tormentor who…who made me feel things. You annoyed and irritated the shit out of me, but you didn’t back down. You held your ground and fought back when many others would have cringed and run away. You never let me intimidate you. From day one you intrigued me, you challenged me, and you frustrated me. If I’m honest, you still do all that and more, but now I enjoy it. You had a strength to you, which I later realized came from your capacity to love. Having benefited from that love and strength too many times to count, I know exactly how lucky I am that you chose to love me.”

“Reid, I never had a choice in loving you. I just…love you. It happened, there was no choice to make. I couldn’t change the way I felt…feel now, even if I wanted to, which I don’t. I’m perfectly happy loving you and being loved by you.”

“That’s about how I felt, no control in loving you. I think that’s what drove me crazy, the lack of control. But then I realized that loving you and being loved by you was the best thing that had ever happened to me. You intrigue and provoke me. You are still annoying and irritating, always challenging me. Yet you are also hopeful, loving, cloyingly naïve, nice and cheerful despite all the crap that you’ve endured over the years.
Once you love someone, it’s with your whole heart and soul; I am grateful every day that that’s how you love me despite my being an uncaring, rude jerk and an asshole. Yeah I know, some of my better qualities.”

They both softly laughed. Luke raised his free hand to pat the side of Reid’s face.

“Hey that’s my asshole boyfriend you’re talking about. I happen to love that he’s rude and a jerk. Because more importantly, he’s honest and he does care, even if he doesn’t show the world, he shows me. I am privileged that he only shares those wonderful sides of his colorful personality with me, it makes me feel special. And Reid, just so you know, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me.” He leaned in and laid a soft kiss upon Reid’s lips. “Every day I love you more than the day before.”

“I never imagined wanting to spend my life with someone. I didn’t believe in that fairy-tale-forever love that people spoke of…but now, now I can’t imagine my life without you in it. I don’t want to think about that. You are my life, you make everything worthwhile. Without you, I am nothing.”

Reid stood up and stepped in front of Luke. He then knelt on one knee and took both of Luke’s hands in his. He stared unwaveringly into those beautiful brown eyes and spoke softly yet firmly. “Simply said, I love you Luke and I don’t want to live without you. I am yours, as you are mine. I would be honored and grateful if you would allow me to be your husband. Will you marry me?”

Looking into those glistening blue eyes that he loved, Luke blinked once and let his own tears fall down his cheeks. “Yes.”

Luke reached out with both hands on either side of Reid’s face and melded their lips together once again.
Reid leaned back and once again reached into his pocket, this time he pulled out a small black velvet box. He opened it and presented it to Luke. Inside were two matching gold bands.

“Reid.” Luke whispered, looking into his eyes. Reid was overwhelmed by the love he saw in those beautiful brown eyes. He had been rather confident of Luke’s answer. They’d been a couple for more than two years, were happy together and they had thrived in their love for one another. Yet there was a tiny speck in the back of Reid’s mind that had believed that Luke might say no. He’d never admit it to Luke but he still worried that one day Luke would wake up and believe that he was wasting his time with this ornery, rude old man and realize that he deserved so much more than Reid could give him. Little did Reid know that Luke had often felt the same, that Reid would want someone older, educated, more experienced, more accomplished than Luke. At this moment though, seeing the love in each other’s eyes, both men lost all doubts and fears. This was right. This was meant to be. They were meant to be together. Their love was real. It was everything.

“I love you Reid.” Luke whispered, his voice laden with emotion. Ever so softly their lips met in a tender kiss. “Do we have to wait to wear them?”

“Only if you want to.”

“No. I want to wear them now. Will you put mine on my finger?” Luke asked softly.

“You need to read the inscription first.” Reid said before picking out Luke’s ring out and handing it to him.

Luke looked inside and read aloud “Forever and Always” He nodded. “Perfect. That is how long I’m going to love you, forever and always.”

He handed the ring back to Reid who then put it on Luke’s ring finger and kissed it in place. He then lifted out his ring and handed it to Luke, who looked inside to see the matching inscription, and he smiled. He repeated Reid’s actions, placing the ring on his finger and leaving it with a kiss. Both men stood up, fell into each other’s arms and kissed.

Luke smiled as he looked over Reid’s shoulder at his ring shining under the glare of the twinkle lights.

“I promise you Reid, this ring is never coming off. You’re stuck with me for the rest of our lives.”

“Forever and always, Mr. Snyder.”

“Ooh, not for long. Soon, I’m going to be Mr. Oliver.”

“Really? I know we’ve never talked about that but I assure you it’s okay if you want to keep Snyder.”

“No way Reid. I want us to be Dr. and Mr. Oliver”

“You’re sure about that?”

“Yes I am. It’s not like I’m needed to keep the Snyder name going, I do have a couple of brothers that can do that, or who knows maybe one of the girls will do so. No, it’s time for me to be an Oliver. I want to have the same last name as you. Besides, this is our family, you and me. And I want our kids to be Olivers.”

“Kids huh?”

“Yes, kids. You promised me kids when we moved into the house remember? We have those two extra rooms for our eventual kids. I’m not saying we’re having them anytime soon but one day.”

“I do remember that, rather fondly. You were quite excited about the prospect and if I remember correctly, you showed me just how happy you were by making love with me on the dining room table. And yes Luke, I want kids with you. One more thing I never knew I wanted until I met you. As I also recall, I promised you a future dog that day too. What do you say we start with one of those first?”

“Perfect! A dog and then in a few years kids!”

“But let’s get married first, okay?”

“Yes, first things first and that means a wedding to plan. Oh God Reid I love you.”

Reid’s hands held Luke tightly at the hips. He chuckled before his lips covered Luke’s to try and contain his excitement. Luke soon took control of the kiss. He buried one hand in Reid’s hair, not allowing him to move as his teeth lightly nipped at Reid’s lower lip, causing his mouth to open for Luke’s tongue to deepen the kiss. Luke’s other hand traveled beneath Reid’s blazer, from his hip to the small of his back, where he pulled Reid’s body to him to ground their hips together. Wanting more contact Luke pulled Reid’s shirttails out and laid his hand on the bare skin just above his pants. As Luke’s hand started to move beneath the waistline of his pants, Reid pulled back.

“Stop. We can’t.” Reid whispered before Luke’s lips took back control.

“What?” Kiss. “Why not?” Kiss. “Miss you.” Kiss. “Need to feel you.” Kiss.

“Nugh.” Reid pulled away from Luke’s lips, closed his eyes and touched their foreheads together. “Need you too.”

“Then why stop? I thought we were celebrating.”

“Because we’re not exactly alone.”

“What? What are you talking about?”

Just then Luke heard a commotion coming from the direction of the farmhouse. Still holding each other, both men turned to look towards the pathway in time to see a large crowd of people coming towards the pond.

Luke saw Ethan and Jacob just ahead of the group, trying not to run. It appeared that a few of the men, Casey, Henry, Simon and Aaron were walking just outside of the group and each was carrying a portable light. Luke didn’t even know Aaron was in Oakdale. He saw his parents, Holden and Lily, along with his sisters, Faith, Natalie and even Abigail. What was she doing in town? Both of his grandmothers, Emma and Lucinda, were being escorted by Lucinda’s husband Dr. John Dixon. Luke took note of Maddie, Katie and Barbara walking with Kim Hughes. Bob was behind them talking to…Judge Walters? What? Wait a minute, weren’t the Hugheses supposed to be in Arizona?

Luke’s confusion rose as the group of their loved ones moved closer. He turned to look into Reid’s eyes.

“Reid? Why are all of our family and friends here?”

“Well…” Reid gave him a crooked smile. “What do you say to getting married tonight?”

“Wh-What? Tonight?”

“Yeah, tonight. We’re both dressed up, looking damn good if I may say so. The setting is rather romantic, with the lights and you and me.” Reid winked at him. “And yeah all of our family and friends are here. So why not now? What is there to wait for? Unless…” Reid started to frown. “You’re not ready to get married. You want to wait. You’re going to want a long engagement. I did this all wrong, you want a big, fancy wedding where we invite everyone in town and every single person we’ve ever met. Damn I thought you’d like this.”

Reid let go of Luke and tried to step away but Luke’s arm around his waist gripped him tightly, not allowing him to move. Luke’s hand moved from the back of Reid’s head and caressed his cheek, lifting it so they could look into each other’s eyes.

“You’re babbling.” Luke laid a soft kiss upon Reid’s lips. “Reid I love you and this IS perfect. I couldn’t have dreamt of a moment any better than this. When I was younger and would allow myself to dream of getting married, I knew I wanted it to happen here by the pond.” He smiled shyly. “If it was just you and me here under these twinkling lights I’d be perfectly happy to marry you. I have you, I don’t need nor want anything else. But this…you included everyone that is important to us to share this moment with us. It’s the most romantic, intimate wedding I could have ever wanted. This is exactly the wedding I want.” Luke kissed him deeply, then pulled back and gave Reid his biggest and brightest smile. “Let’s get married.”

Suddenly two pairs of small arms wrapped around both men’s legs. Looking down, seeing Ethan and Jacob smiling up at them, Luke and Reid started to laugh. Both young boys raised their arms, asking to be lifted up.

At seven, Ethan was a bit heavy, and Luke needed both arms to lift him up. He wrapped both arms around the boy as he received an exuberant hug. Reid easily lifted the three year old Jacob onto one arm and wrapped his other arm around Luke as they waited for the others to arrive. Jacob kissed Reid’s cheek before laying his head upon his shoulder and giggling at Luke and Ethan.

“Luke! You’re getting married!” Ethan said excitedly.

“I know!” Luke couldn’t help but join in his little brother’s excitement. “Ethan, I think you’re even more excited than I am!”

“This is the bestest day ever!”

“Did you boys help Reid prepare this surprise for me?”

“We helped a lot! Hanging all the lights, huh Jacob?” He looked at his young cousin, who nodded happily. Luke raised an eyebrow at Reid, who just shrugged and smiled at the boys. Luke could only imagine how much ‘help’ the two young boys had been. “Reid made us promise not to tell you. We had a secret! Were you surprised?”

“Yes I was, this was a great surprise. You did a good job keeping the secret. Thank you for helping Reid.”

“You’re welcome. We like helping Reid, he gives us candy.”

“Hey! That was a secret too!” Reid tried to sound offended but his smile proved he was teasing.

“Oh-oh, sorry Reid.” Ethan put his hands on Luke’s cheeks and continued in a whisper. “Luke, please don’t tell. The candy is s’pose to be a secret. We can’t tell Mommy or Katie.” He then put a finger over his own mouth. “Shhh.”

Luke tried hard not to laugh, biting his lower lip before replying. “ No worries, buddy, your secret is safe with me.”

“Luke, Reid.” Holden was standing with Lily, before the men. “Can we assume he said yes?”

“Yes. Yes I did.” Luke set Ethan down before he was enveloped in hugs from his parents. While hugging his mom, he saw Reid shaking hands with his dad before getting a pat on the back from Bob and a hug from Katie.

“Reid asked us to wait for about twenty or thirty minutes after the lights came on before we came out. The boys were quite excited and when Ethan peaked, he saw you kissing and we assumed it was okay to join you.” Lily explained.

“Where were you hiding? I didn’t see any cars and the house was dark.” Luke asked.

“Oh baby, we were all hiding in the house with the lights off, hoping you wouldn’t come in. The cars are behind the barn.”

Luke laughed. “You’re all so sneaky. Dad, can I assume that you helped Reid with all this?” He waved an arm at the lights.

Holden smiled and shrugged his shoulders. “Everyone helped in their own way.”

“Thank you everyone, I appreciate all your hard work. It’s beautiful and I love it!”

“I’m planning to keep the lights up through Christmas. I think they’ll look wonderful with the snow and maybe we’ll plan a few sleigh rides out here so more people can enjoy their beauty.” Emma spoke up.

“That’s a great idea. Does that mean Reid and I can come back and enjoy them before then also?”

“Of course dear, both of you are welcome to come out here anytime you’d like - if you promise to join me for dinner.”

“Oh, I think we can do that, can’t we Reid?”

“What’s that? Home-cooked dinner with Emma? Oh, if you insist. You know I can’t refuse your food.”

“Well, gentlemen, are we ready to get married?” Judge Walters asked.

Luke and Reid looked at each other and smiled. “Yes, yes we are sir.” Luke spoke for both of them. He stepped forward to whisper something to the judge before returning to Reid’s side. “Let’s get married.”

Within a few minutes, Luke and Reid were standing before the judge, who stood with the pond behind him. Their loved ones formed a half-circle behind them. Neither man noticed that Casey stood just off to the side, videotaping the ceremony for them. Luke and Reid each wrapped an arm around the other’s waist and leaned in towards each other, not willing to lose contact through this experience.

As silence settled amongst those gathered, Judge Walters began:

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here tonight to witness the uniting of these two men in marriage. Marriage is an honorable estate and should not be entered into without careful thought and consideration. These men are making the sacred commitment to be each other’s friend, lover and companion for the rest of their lives, to share all of life’s experiences and adventures, with love and respect for one another. We are here to celebrate the love and commitment they share. We are here to support the solemn vows they are about to make to each other. Gentlemen, do you have rings which you would like to exchange?”

Luke lifted his hand to show the judge that he was already wearing his ring. He then laid his left hand upon Reid’s left hand at his hip, connecting their rings together.

“Ah, you have already done so. These rings are a symbol of the everlasting commitment you are making. Through the years, the rings may get dinged or bent out of shape, no longer a perfect circle. But remember this, they will remain solid and keep their strength as long as you care for them, much like your marriage. You will no doubt be faced with obstacles and arguments, such is life, but by remaining strong together and remembering the love you share today and the vows you are making, I have no doubt that your marriage will withstand all the tests life brings you. ”

“Now, for the vows. Luke will you face Reid and repeat after me…”

Luke and Reid turned to face each other, lifting their arms to hold their love in a tender embrace. Once again there were tears glistening in their eyes as they softly smiled. Luke silently mouthed the words ‘I love you’ leading Reid to wink at him.

“I, Luciano Eduardo Snyder, take you, Reid Benjamin Oliver, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health; I vow to love, honor and cherish you from this day forward, forever and always.”

“Reid, your turn. Repeat after me…”

“I, Reid Benjamin Oliver, take you, Luciano Eduardo Snyder, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health; I vow to love, honor and cherish you from this day forward, forever and always.”

Reid whispered “I love you.” and laid a gentle kiss upon Luke’s forehead.

“Having said these vows and affirmed your commitment to each other, Luke and Reid, I now, by the power and virtue of the authority vested in me by the state of Illinois, pronounce you husband and husband.”

As cheers arose through the crowd, Luke and Reid grinned at each other. They were married and their joy was evident in their smiles.

“Um, you may now kiss your husband.” Judge Walters said with a hint of humor in his tone.

“With pleasure.” Reid’s lips descended upon Luke’s sharing all their love and devotion in one deep, intimate kiss. So lost in each other they blocked out the cheering as it got louder, only stopping when Judge Walters laid a hand upon their shoulders. “Uh-hum.”

Not breaking their embrace, they turned their heads, still cheek to cheek, to look at the judge.

“Ladies and gentlemen, may I now present to you, Dr. and Mr. Oliver.”

Immediately, they were surrounded by their family and friends, hugs, kisses and tears flowing freely. Everyone offered their congratulations and hopes for a long life together.

Luke soon learned that Aaron and Abigail were called personally by Reid to attend. He knew that Luke would want all of his siblings to share in this moment with him. Apparently Reid had extended a personal invitation to every person in attendance. Luke looked around to see all the couples standing together happily. Holden and Lily, Lucinda and John, Bob and Kim, Katie and Simon, Casey and Maddie and Henry and Barbara. He felt so blessed to be surrounded by so much love, especially from his husband who hadn’t left his side.

“Why don’t we move this celebration up to the house and have some wedding cake? I made Reid’s favorite, chocolate with raspberry filling and a cream cheese frosting.” Emma enticed.

“Grandma, you made us a wedding cake?”

“But of course. You can’t have a wedding without cake, especially when the wedding is held at my home.”

Luke stepped forward and hugged her. “Thank you so much. Do you mind if Reid and I join you in a few minutes?”

“Please, take all the time you want. We will wait for you.” Emma smiled fondly at both men. “Let’s go people, let’s give the newlyweds a bit of privacy.” Soon she had everyone ushered up the path towards the house.

Luke and Reid sat upon their bench. Reid wrapped his arms around Luke, who had laid his head upon Reid’s shoulder. They sat in comfortable silence just holding each other for many minutes. Luke raised their intertwined left hands, looking upon their matching rings.

“We’re married, Reid, really and truly married.” There was awe in his voice as he said, “Husbands.”

“Yep, husbands. Forever and always Luke.

“Forever and always.” Luke snuggled further into Reid. “Reid, thank you. This is the best moment of my life. I love you so much.”

Reid kissed the top of Luke’s head. “I love you too.”

Epilogue

The next morning Luke’s eyes slowly opened. He felt Reid’s heartbeat under his cheek where he rested his head upon Reid’s chest. He was reluctant to move, finding comfort entwined in Reid’s arms and their tangled legs. He smiled as he recalled the events of last night. THEY WERE MARRIED!!

After relaxing together under the twinkling lights for about twenty minutes, they had joined their loved ones for cake. While everyone stayed to celebrate, Luke and Reid returned home; with a full layer of cake just for the two of them. Luke had asked about a honeymoon, to which Reid replied that he thought Luke must be tired of hotels, and they would take a long honeymoon together in a few months. For now, they were going home, the one place they never wanted to leave. Reid had arranged it so that they would be undisturbed for the next three days. No visitors, no phone calls, no pages from the hospital, nowhere to go and nothing to interrupt their time together. The refrigerator was crammed full of meals prepared by Emma for them, all they had to do was reheat and eat. For the next three days, the newlyweds wouldn’t need to leave the house, they didn’t even need to put on clothing. It would be just the two of them living and loving happily.

The silence was interrupted by the sound of light tapping on wood. Luke looked at the clock on the bedside table, nine am. Luke again heard the light tapping. It sounded like someone was at the front door, but he couldn’t imagine who it could be as everyone had been warned by Reid to, “leave us the hell alone.” Quickly and quietly untangling himself, Luke crawled out of bed and pulled on a pair of sleep pants. He winced a little as the movement caused a bit of soreness. Walking towards the front door, he smiled as he remembered why he was sore; making love with his husband twice last night and again just three hours ago.

Luke opened the door to see a woman standing there. Carol? Lucinda’s assistant? She was holding a couple of canvas bags.

“Good morning, Luke. I’m not here to interrupt your honeymoon, I’m just supposed to drop off these containers for you and Reid,” she started to explain.

“Luke, what the hell? Who’s at the door?” Reid’s voice startled him.

“Calm down Reid, it’s just Carol. She has something for us.”

“What? What could she possibly have that would make it necessary to disregard the instructions that we’re not to be disturbed?”

“Sir, if I may?” Carol spoke firmly. “This is from Mrs. Walsh-Dixon. She knows that you have plenty of food for the weekend but she felt that you may not be…shall we say…energized enough this morning to prepare breakfast. So she had her personal chef prepare your breakfast for you. Now if I could just hand you these bags, I will be on my way and you will not be disturbed again.”

Carol handed both bags to Reid.

“May I offer congratulations on your marriage? Now, I shall bid you good bye, gentlemen,” Carol said before she turned and walked away from the stunned men.

“Food?” Reid took a deep breath and was bombarded by the delicious aromas of breakfast foods.

They took the bags to the dining room table and started to unload containers. They found a veritable feast: pancakes, waffles, fried potatoes, bacon, sausage, and ham and cheese omelets. Also included were two carafes, one with orange juice, the other held coffee.

“Luke, your grandmother is a wonderful, thoughtful woman.”

“Yes she is, but don’t let her hear you say that. She’ll just deny it.”

As they were finishing their delicious breakfast, Reid spoke up. “Luke I think this is how we should celebrate our anniversary every year. This meal, you know it’s full of carbs and protein for energy,” there was his trademark smirk and a wink, “followed by lots of mind-blowing sex.”

Luke moved to straddle his husband’s lap, oh how he loved that word, husband! and kissed him soundly. “I think that is an excellent idea. How about we move this celebration into the bedroom?”

“With pleasure,” Reid caressed Luke’s cheek. “I love you, Mr. Oliver.”

“And I love you, Dr. Oliver.”
