SERENDIPITY - EPILOGUE
16 May 2011
“Happy birthday Luke. I love you.” Reid lays gentle kisses along Luke’s neck. He starts to nip and suckle at his favorite spot, where the neck and shoulder meet. He noticed that the almost permanent marking was fading, he refuses to allow that to happen.
“I love you…Best…present ev…nghh” He ends with a moan of pleasure.
“I aim to please.” He stares down into Luke’s eyes, dark brown with desire.
“And you succeed. Beyond all expectations.” Luke pulls his lips to kiss him deeply. More than a year later, he can’t get enough of Reid. “Do we really have to go to the dedication of the new wing today?”
“I’d much rather stay in bed with you, but I believe that we are both expected to be there.”
“Yeah, you’re right. It would be weird for the Chief of Neurosurgery not to be at the opening of his own facility.”
“Not to mention, the generous benefactor who donated all the money to build the unit. Besides you have a speech to give.”
“No I don’t, you’re the one with the speech.”
“I decided that I’m letting you give my speech. You wrote it. And you’re better at talking to people. Please.” He kisses him softly. “We do have time for a shower, if we get up now.”
“Ooh, birthday shower!”

The dedication ceremony for the Snyder Neurosurgical Center was lovely. Luke gave Reid’s speech, though he insisted that Reid stand next to him the entire time. Retired Dr Hughes and current Memorial Chief of Staff Dr. Susan Stewart also gave speeches. Luncheon was served and tours of the new facility were given to all in attendance.
Casey and Maddie Hughes attended with their baby boy Robert Lucas, Bobby as he was known. Casey was attending law school and Maddie worked with Luke at The Foundation.
Katie and Jacob arrived with Jason and Annie. Reid had convinced Dr. Hughes that he needed to hire Jason, a brilliant pediatrician- Reid’s words, for the hospital last summer, before he retired. Jason and Katie’s friendship had slowly blossomed into love and they were engaged to be married in June. Having both lost a beloved spouse, they were glad to have found someone who understood their feelings of loss. They had spent many months, getting to know each other. They were excited about adding to their family- Katie’s baby was due in November. Annie and Jacob adored each other. She was a great big sister and was ready for the new baby to be here already. Annie had fallen in love with the horses at Snyder Farm and tried to spend all her free time there. The Snyder’s had fallen equally in love with the precocious little girl. When she wasn’t enjoying her riding lessons with Holden and Luke, she could be found in the kitchen with Emma, learning how to bake.
Though Bob and his wife Kim had retired to Arizona, he had stayed involved in the building of the neuro wing. They had returned to Oakdale for the month of May, for the dedication ceremony and to visit their many family members.
Luke and Reid had lived in Luke’s one-bedroom apartment for seven months before deciding to buy a home together. They needed office space and Luke wanted a yard so that they could get a dog. Reid mentioned that if they planned to have kids they needed more than one bedroom, Luke hadn’t stopped grinning for days. Now, they lived in a home with four bedrooms, one office with two desks, a huge family room to entertain and a large fenced-in backyard where Molly, their chocolate lab loved to run.
In fifteen months they talked, shared, fought, loved and faced life together. This was their time and they were living every moment together. They were happy and in love.
The End.
