SERENDIPITY - CHAPTER NINE
Luke woke up, lifted his head slightly off of Reid’s chest and glancing at the clock, he noticed that the time was shortly before seven. He reached over and turned the alarm off before it could ring. Feeling confident, he kisses Reid’s neck. Straddling Reid’s hips, his lips move slowly along Reid’s collarbone. He starts nipping, kissing and marking Reid’s tender skin, before moving further down his body.
“Nghh.” Reid’s eyes remain closed as his body wakes up. “Don’t you dare stop.”
*******
An hour later they lay together on their sides, fully sated, holding each other, all tangled limbs and messy sheets.
“Damn Luke, you’re better than any alarm clock. That’s one helluva way to wake up.” Reid grins as he lightly slaps Luke’s ass.
“I thought you might like that.” Luke replies as he snuggles into Reid’s chest. “I wish we could cancel our meetings and stay in bed all day.”
“That’s a very nice idea. Unfortunately I’m not sure I’d survive all day. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to be the recipient of all your pent up sexual frustrations but damn Luke, you’re wearing me out.”
“Oh really? I know I heard you moaning this morning but I don’t seem to remember hearing any complaints…nor last night or even earlier this morning.”
“No, no complaints. I rather enjoy fulfilling all your sexual needs. It’s quite pleasurable, but as much as I hate to admit this, I’m not as young as you and I need a little time to recoup my strength before we continue.”
“Old man, my ass. I’m barely keeping up with you.” Luke laughs before Reid kisses him.
“I just had a thought.”
“Should I be worried?”
“Jerk.” Luke replies as they both chuckle.
“Don’t leave me in suspense.”
“Well, since I’m now staying all week so we can spend time together…Do we really need two rooms? You could just stay here with me. If you did that, we could wake up like this every morning.”
“Okay.”
“Did you just say yes?”
“You sound surprised.”
“Yeah I guess I am, I wasn’t sure that you’d agree.”
“Well, let’s look at this logically. You do have a larger room- oops almost forgot, suite.” Reid winks at him. “There is that spacious tub that is in need of more enjoyment and I did notice that the shower is also large enough for two. I’m assuming that you’re going to be providing room service? Oh! Let’s not forget…convenient access to your young, bendy, sexy body.”
Luke closes his eyes and shakes his head as he tries not to laugh.
“Nice to know what your priorities are.”
“Yep, it doesn’t take much to keep me happy.” Reid rolls Luke onto his back before kissing him deeply.
“But for now I need to go back to my current room and get ready. I have dumbfounded med students to astound with my brilliance and I am in need of coffee before I subject myself to their asinine questions.”
“Okay, go show off your genius to the lower life forms.”
Reid gets out of bed and begins to search for his clothes amongst the clothing strewn about the room. As he’s finishing dressing, he notices Luke, still in laying in bed, leaning on one elbow and biting his lower lip, watching him.
“Like the view?”
“Very much so.” Luke winks at him and then stretches languidly.
“You are just temptation personified.” Reid shakes his head. “How am I going to survive this week?”
“Oh, I think you’re going to be just fine doctor.” Luke replies as he walks, naked, towards Reid and wraps him in a hug.
“I’m glad you have such faith in me.”
“That I do, you’ve proven your endurance already.” Luke kisses him lightly before taking a step back. “When I leave, I’ll stop at the front desk and ask them to hold a keycard for you. My meeting should only be about an hour, but if not and you arrive here before I do, you can make yourself at home.”
“Sounds like a plan. Good luck at your meeting.” Reid kisses him on the forehead before leaving.
*******
“Hi honey, I’m home.” Reid calls out as he enters the suite, one hand pulling his suitcase, the other carrying a paper sack and his briefcase.
“Hey Reid.” Luke replies distractedly. He is sitting on the sofa with a mess of papers strewn across the coffee table in front of him. He appears to be writing notes in a yellow legal pad that is resting on his thigh.
Reid leaves his briefcase and luggage next to the door. He moves a couple of papers on the table to make room to set paper sack down. He sits next to Luke, one arm resting on the back of the sofa.
“Well that’s not exactly the cheerful response I was expecting. Having second thoughts already?”
“What? No, of course not.” Luke sets the notebook on the table, on top of the mess. He leans back and lays his head on Reid’s shoulder. “I’m sorry Reid. I’m very happy that you’re here.”
Reid leans down and kisses the top of Luke’s head. “So what’s wrong? How did your meeting go?”
“Uh, not so good. That’s what this mess is.” He waves a hand at all the papers. “It’s all my current information about Mr. Collins and his company. I’m just making some final notes and driving myself crazy wondering if I could have done anything different.”
“What happened? Did he not like your presentation?” Reid’s arm slides down around Luke’s shoulders to comfort him.
“Actually, Mr. Collins said that he was really impressed with my proposal. He likes The Foundation’s business plan. He likes our projects and is interested in helping. The only problem is that with the economy as bad as it is, his board is wary of making too many charitable donations. They’ve already chosen the charities that they are going to sponsor this year and they are not allocating any further monies. Unfortunately, that means that they will be unable to work with The Foundation this year.”
“That sucks. Sounds like this board was going to say no even before you presented your proposal. Basically they just wasted your time.”
“That’s exactly how it feels. If they weren’t planning to help, why set up the meeting in the first place? I don’t know…I guess it was a good thing that I was able to give them my presentation. At least they listened to my goals and ideas for The Foundation. Like I said, Mr. Collins was really interested and he told me that we’d be the first ones they call on next year.”
“It still sucks.”
“Yeah it does. So, what’s in the bag?”
“Oh! I brought us lunch. There’s this great diner nearby that has the best cheeseburgers.”
Luke gathered all his papers together and put them in a folder, with the notepad on top, he set them to one side, making room for lunch.
“How about grabbing us a couple of cokes?” Reid asked as he pulled out cheeseburgers and fries.
*******
“Mmm, that was a great cheeseburger! So how did you find this diner?” Luke spoke as he finished off his burger and Reid was eating the last of the fries.
“My grandfather took me there when I was a kid and then I practically survived on their food during college.”
“What was college like for you?”
“It was fine, I studied and worked hard. Graduated top of my class.
“Why does that not surprise me?”
“It shouldn’t, I am a genius. It would be shocking if I hadn’t been the best.”
“Oh how I love your modesty.”
“Modesty is a waste of time. I’m damn good and I refuse to deny it.”
Luke surprised Reid by straddling his lap and kissing his neck.
“Don’t worry doctor, I like your arrogance, it turns me on.” He whispered in Reid’s ear before nipping the lobe.
*******
Reid is instantly awakened when he hears his cell phone ring. He reaches one hand to retrieve it off the nightstand next to the bed. Reading the caller-id, he answers it quickly before it could wake Luke.
“Sarah? Hold on a minute.” He eases Luke off of his chest and slips out of bed. He silently leaves the room.
“What’s wrong?…Okay. I’m assuming that Dr. Statham is already running the protocol that I had in place if anything went wrong while I was gone?…Good. Have you checked flights yet?” He looks at his watch, it’s just after three am. “Nothing earlier? Then get me on the five o’clock. Take care of the details…Have Dr. Statham call me as soon as he has her stable…No, I’ll call Dr. Novak myself…Thank you Sarah.”
Reid quietly went back into the bedroom. He took a few moments to watch Luke sleep before removing his suitcase. After getting dressed, he quickly made sure he had all his belongings packed.
He hated having to leave Luke. He looked so peaceful sleeping in their bed, that Reid felt horrible for wanting to wake him. Funny how quickly it had become their bed. He’s grown quite attached to the young man. He’s not ready for their time together to end, he’d been looking forward to spending all week with Luke. Looking around he sees Luke’s notepad lying on the coffee table where he moved it earlier, he decides to leave Luke a note.
*******
After lunch, they hadn’t left the suite. Luke had instigated the interlude on the sofa. Reid had enjoyed himself as he gave Luke complete control. A hot, steamy shower followed. They spent the rest of the afternoon and evening, alternating between sex, quiet talks and brief naps.
Luke told Reid about his ideas for his foundation, Reid was impressed with his generosity and work ethic. Reid spoke of his work. Luke didn’t understand much of the medical jargon but loved to hear the pride and awe in Reid’s voice when he explained the complexities of some of his surgeries. Luke asked if he could attend Reid’s lecture in the morning, explaining that he wanted to see Reid’s genius in action. Reid was unable to deny the request. So they made plans to go out to lunch then do some sight-seeing after Reid’s lecture.
Reid told Luke about growing up in Cambridge and mentioned a few places that he wanted to show Luke. They spent their time either naked or wrapped up in the comfy bathrobes. Reid liked naked Luke but also enjoyed unwrapping his robe. They ordered dinner in, eating at the dining table before sharing dessert in bed.
*******
Luke rolled over expecting to feel Reid’s body. Still half-asleep he stretched out an arm searching for skin and muscle. Finding only cooling sheets, Luke opened his eyes.
“Reid? Where are you?” He calls out to the empty room. Thinking Reid must be in the outer room, he gets out of bed to search for him.
Tying his robe’s belt around his waist, he opens the bedroom door to see Reid walking to the main door.
“Reid? What’s going on? Why are you dressed?” He sounds confused and runs a hand through his hair as he tries to wake up completely.
“Luke, I’m sorry but I have to leave. It’s an emergency. One of my patients needs surgery and I have to get to the airport now.”
“What? You’re leaving?” Luke finally notices that Reid has his luggage in hand. “For a patient? Isn’t there someone else who can take care of them?”
“No. My associate is monitoring her and doing what he can to keep her stable but I’m the only one who can perform this particular surgery. I need to do this.”
“So what, you were just going to sneak out? Not even wake me up? Really? Nice to know that your patients take such precedence.” Anger and disbelief evident in his voice.
“Luke, I don’t have time to fight with you. I need to leave now, there’s a car waiting to take me to the airport.”
“You’re packed and had time to call down for a car but you couldn’t take even one minute to wake me, to let me know that you were leaving. Wow. That would have been such a nice surprise. Priorities, huh? Fine then, go. Take care of your patient. See if I care.” Luke stands with his arms folded over his chest glaring at Reid.
“I’m sorry Luke.” Reid opens the door. His cell phone starts to ring.
“Reid, wait.” Luke cries out as he runs to him and hugs him tightly. “I’m sorry, I know your patient needs you.”
He softly kisses Reid’s lips. “Go. Go be brilliant and save her.”
“Good-bye Luke.” Reid turns away before answering his phone.
The door closes and Luke leans against it. “Good-bye Reid.”
Damn, he still doesn’t know Reid’s last name, nor where he lives. Part of him wants to run after Reid and beg him for the information. He slowly lowers himself to the floor and hugs his knees. He closes his eyes, stopping the tears that threatened to fall.
When he finally calms down and feels in control again, he opens his eyes, noticing that all his paperwork for the Collins’ account is scattered on the floor by the coffee table. He must have clipped an edge when he ran past, causing all the various papers, the folder and the notepad to fall to the floor. He took a deep breath, stood up and walked over to pick up the mess. Not bothering to sort the paperwork he just put all the loose papers into the folder without looking at any of it. After all, he wasn’t going to need Mr. Collins’ information again until next year, so he had time to put it back in order later.
As he’s putting the folder into his messenger bag, Luke spies a crumpled paper next to the trash can. He picks it up, intending to throw it away, he doesn’t remember attempting to throw any papers away. Curious, he smoothes out the paper and is stunned by what he reads.
Luke,
I don't think I can
Luke stands in shock- obviously Reid attempted to write a note but didn’t finish it. Luke looks into the trash and there is another wadded up paper, he pulls it out and reads it.
Luke,
I'm not ready
WHAT?! Not ready for what? Don’t think that…? What the hell? Why didn’t he finish the notes? Is that why he didn’t wake Luke up? Was he going to leave him a note? Saying what exactly? A Dear Luke note?
Reid had told Luke that he didn’t do relationships but Luke had hoped that just maybe Reid’s feelings were changing. They were enjoying themselves so much that Luke had thought that Reid, like himself, might want to continue to explore this attraction they had. But no, he didn’t leave a note and had been attempting to sneak out of the suite, not bothering to wake Luke.
Maybe Luke didn’t mean anything to Reid. Maybe this had just been a brief affair. Maybe Reid never had any intention of seeing Luke after their week together ended.
Relationships were complicated and interfered with Reid’s work. And obviously that work took precedence over everything else in his life, including Luke. If he had been important to Reid, if Reid had wanted to see Luke again, he would have told him so, he would have at least told Luke how to get in touch with him. He didn’t say anything but goodbye.
He had to stop thinking about Reid. He had to let him go, no matter how much it hurt.
Right now, he didn’t want to think about anything but leaving Boston.
