It took only two words to define the one thing he wanted most in the world: no pain. Well, if he were really honest with himself, that wasn't quite true. There were two things he wanted most in the world; the second could be described in three words: Dr. James Wilson.
Wilson had been with him longer than the pain. Wilson had seen him through the worst of it, both the physical pain in his leg and the emotional pain after Stacy had walked out. House didn't totally understand why Wilson stood by him then or why he still did but was silently grateful nonetheless.
Five simple words summed up his heart's deepest desires. It wasn't really likely that he'd get either one, so he downed Vicodin like candy and made jokes with Wilson. He didn't get what he wanted, but he found that sometimes, he got what he needed.
