Friday at Nicodemus Terrace: Back in the Right Body

May 19, 2006 12:53

Lana had been incredibly relieved to wake up back in her own body. She still felt a bit shaken though, so she'd called in to work and gone home to hole up and try to get herself back together.

It felt so... comforting to be back in her own space.

Lex was concerned greatly about Lana missing work, and so it was that Friday he finally made it by to see her.

He knocked on the door and waited patiently.

Lana started a bit when she heard the knock on her door. Who would... Oh God. Not Rodney.

She opened the door cautiously and wasn't sure if she felt better or worse about seeing Lex there - especially since she so clearly was not sick.

"Hey, Lex. Come on in." She stood back to let him enter the apartment.

Lex breezed past her, and raised an eyebrow at her demeanor. He stood in silence for a few seconds.

"Did I do something wrong?" He asked quietly.

"What?" Lana looks startled. "Oh no, not you. Just... well... I've been out of work all week, feeling a little guilty and then the big boss shows up..."

"That's what I'm talking about," He replied, his eyes studying her. "A whole week. Sick, I believe is what I heard. And I got worried, and..."

He sighed and walked over to sit on her couch.

"You don't seem ill, so I'm left wondering what I did wrong."

She went over and sat down a little nervously beside him. "It's not you, I swear," she assured him.

She hesitated, biting her lip, then decided he deserved to know the whole story. "I... God... I woke up Tuesday morning in someone else's body. Apparently a lot of people did, not just me. And... I didn't know what to do. Not even Ro- People had a hard time believing that I wasn't the person I looked like and I didn't see how I could go into work..." she waved her hands," You know... I didn't turn back to myself till this morning and I just still felt so... unsettled, that..."

Her voice trailed off. Right. Like Lex was going to believe her any more than Rodney had.

Lex eyed her for a moment. His eyes slid up and down every inch of her. Assessing. Processing. Deciding.

"Lana, we lived through a lot of craziness back in Smallville," He started, his voice carrying a hurt edge to it. "But I can't understand why you are making up this insane story?"

He stood up and folded his arms. "I see the marks, the bruises, the hickeys for God's sakes. And whoever did this to you? Whoever you are afraid of hurting you for talking about it?" He turned back to her. "Who did this? They won't hurt you again, I swear it."

"I can't do this again," she said, mostly to herself, feeling tears come to her eyes. "I can't. Bad enough that he... but if even Lex won't believe me..."

She turned away, curling up into a ball on the couch, arms hugged tightly to her, head down. "I'm not lying to you, Lex. I would never lie to you. I can give you names, numbers, people to call... Please... if you won't believe me either it'll kill me."

Lex watched her reaction and mentally cursed himself. He had assumed...wrongly.

"Lana," He said softly and moved quickly to hold her. "Oh my god I am a fool. I saw the marks and thought....that someone had threatened you into silence. But you are serious."

He used a thumb to smooth a tear away from her eyes. "Can you forgive me for doubting you?"

She let him pull her into his arms and found solace there. She rested her head on his shoulder needing to feel him close. "I know it's hard to believe. It was hard for me to accept. Of course I forgive you. I just... I didn't know what to do."

"I wish you would have come to me," Lex consoled her. "I would have tried to find a way to help you. You know that."

"I was so scared. And... you weren't the only person who didn't believe me. I've been hiding out at Mr. Azirphale's - with a few others who'd changed. I knew I was safe there. I wanted to call, but... God, what would I have said?" Lana looked up at him, still obviously distressed.

"Anything," He shushed her. "But I'm glad you are okay. No need to be scared anymore."

"Did Azirphale do this to you? Was that the price of his hospitality?" Lex nearly spat the words out.

"What? Mr...? God, no!" Lana looked shocked again. "He's, god, Lex. He's an angel. This... " she looked uncomfortable, tugging on her shirt to try and cover some of the marks. "This just happened."

How was she supposed to tell Lex, of all people, that she'd had too much to drink and ended up having wild sex with entirely the wrong person. Amd enjoyed it, craved it again, far more than she'd ever want to admit. God, what he'd think of her!

"Just happened," He said quietly. "Oh."

He sat quietly holding her, his mind racing as he attempted to figure out this twist. Whatever had happened, he was positive hadn't "just" happened. No, someone had done this to her. And that? would not be tolerated.

"So, a boyfriend?"

"Not... exactly," she hedged, flushing uncomfortably. "He, we're... we're friends, I suppose, and I had too much to drink and..."
