Because aids depletes your immune system, you are more susceptible to infection by microbes that someone with a normal immune system would be able to defend against. The aids virus may not kill you, but the opportunistic infections will. At the global level, the number of people living with HIV continues to grow - from 35 million in 2001 to 38 million in 2003.
