Canon v. Nikon

Jul 27, 2006 16:01

You won't be interesting in the following because it's about cameras...

I've been telling myself for several months now that I will not buy anything other than Canon. Canon is the best, no doubt in my mind.

I still believe this, but Nikon is making a run for the money.

Last year Nikon released the D200 - 10 MP, 5 fps, 1.6x crop. The Canon equivalent is what I shoot, the 20D/30D - 8 MP, 5 fps, 1.6x crop. Ultiamtely, the DigicII chip in the Canon beats the crap out of anything Nikon makes, but still, it's a challenge. Canon had the opportunity to blow Nikon out of the water, as they usually do, but instead the merely updated the 20D with a couple of bells and whistles.

The kicker: Nikon is set to release within the next two weeks the next camera in a serious of prosumer cameras - the D80, successor the piece-o-crap D70 and D70s. It should feature 10 MP censor, 5 fps, 1.3x crop - all for under $1,000. Well that's great and terrible for me.

It's too late for me to switch to Nikon, and I wouldn't do that anyway because cameras change constantly, glass cost more and stays around longer. The problem is that I need to invest in a camera soon. Until today, I was going to shell out the cash for a new 30D. Heck yeah, let's get the bells and whistles. Ah, but Nikon is making a push for a piece of the pie. And it's apple pie. And Canon LOVES apple pie.

Canon will more than likely release something soon that beats the crap out of Nikon. And the 30D will be the old, stupid camera by March of 2007. But they still make the 20D...and it's cheaper than ever. If anything, Nikon's new camera will push Canon to reset the bar where Nikon can't reach. You see, Canon is like that bully at the school yard who would take the little kid's shoe and hold it out of reach. The best part is that Nikon used to be that bully when film was still in use. We're a little older and digital hit the market. Canon IS the bully, but we all like him.

I rest my case.
