That's what the headlines will read tomorrow. It's only appropriate.
I can't say that I'm not disappointed. Chris wrote a great column last year about how, as a member of the media, you're taught to disassociate yourself from the fans. As a student and a photographer, that's neither easy nor really necessary.
As an Ole Miss fan, disappointment is all we ever get. We could have gone to Atlanta for the SEC Championship three years ago. But we lost to the eventual national champions. And we could have gone to Omaha last year for the College World Series. But again we lost to the eventual national champions. The thing that hurts more this year is that Miami isn't national championship material. They're really not the good. And obviously, neither is Ole Miss.
All I can say is that everything happens for a reason. It's a motto I've stuck to for a long time now, and it has yet to fail. There's a reason we're not supposed to be in Nebraska right now. I'm okay with that. But, stealing another page from Kieffer's book, as long as I'm a member of the media, I have no desire to go to Omaha unless I have a reason to be there. So close, yet still 800 miles and five runs away.
All in all, I shouldn't be disappointed. Nobody, myself included, expected the Rebels to be in a Super Regional in 2006. They have nothing to hang their heads about because what they did this year was a feat beyond expectations. The team loses all-star Chris Coughlan, sketchy closer Garrett White (he has two innings in him, nothing more) and Alex Presley will probably leave as well. That's not a bad deal, considering the recruiting class will probably be pretty damn good as well. The bar has been raised.
Mike Bianco will stay in Oxford, and I'd be willing to bet this team next year will be back in a Super Regional once more. We shall see.
I rest my case.
