Well, the Rebs trounced the "brokeback" Tigers last night. It was the first time LSU has ever been "mercy-ruled." And only one person struck out for Ole Miss last night - the final batter. Oh, the Tigers are "brokeback" because that's what some crazy fan said that during the game yesterday. Of course, it didn't beat the pretty marketing girl who yelled "I don't have any balls!" to a group of teenage boys who harrassed her for a baseball from the field. I had a hearty laugh.
Ah, a day off. Which is funny because it's like having a day off while you're on vacation. I sat by the pool this morning, relaxing in the room now, about to go see what Birmingham has to offer (Answer: NOT MUCH!).
The Daily Journal has a blog for the tournament, which is a great idea except they're using LiveJournal. Now LiveJournal would be a great host, but they have a format that resembles that of a child's journal. It needs a make-over.
As promised, here comes my update from the previous few months...don't bother reading:
1. Peter’s “Coming of Age Party.” There was a pinata, plenty of dancing, a game of chess in which I captured my own piece, a piece of putty stuck to my hat and lots of laughter and good times. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
2. The night before Peter’s 21st Birthday saw the likes of many of us heading over to Volta in the rain for some pretty pathetic Greek food. After hours of waiting for our sub-par food, we then discovered that Tom’s Roadmaster (eight-seater station wagon) was stuck in the wet gravel behind the restaurant. And we pushed, and we pulled. Nothing. Luckily a guy came along with a tow rope, which we connected to Jenna’s CRV, and Alvin tugged the monster out of the gravel. Result: lots of laughter and a wet ass.
3. Then there was lots of work and studying for the coming week until…
4. Viva Las Vegas…
5. Adventures with Ragman and Stick followed…
6. But what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…
7a. Except I can tell you that my sister and I partied like rock stars with my cousin and his wife, who just happened to be in Vegas on the same weekend. Highlights include the dinner at one of the top restaurants in Vegas (Nine), the Kidrock concert, party at the top of the Palms Casino, top shelf liquor from my cousin, taking one of Kidrock’s tour buses to another party, talking to my aunt at 3 a.m. (not my idea, I swear). All that and my parents called it a night early. They were troopers though, making it to a late show the following evening and being impressed by said show (Le Reve). Stick (a friend of a friend through one of my mother’s coworkers) said his job was to show me the town and send me home wrecked. Gee, thanks pal. I did not partake for a second evening.
7b. I was kidding about the hookers that line the sidewalk, but in reality, the call girls have their workers handing out advertisements all day long. The pimping industry has evidently taken a punch from the economic downfall of the early 21st century, thus forcing pimps to increase wages, decrease bling and put in more hours during the day.
7c. Mom: Here’s $20. You and your sister pick a machine and gamble.
Me: Remember when we used to solicit you for money to play video games? This is so much better.
As we walk through the Mirage hotel
Me: Look Dad, it’s like the Grove…but sleazier.
8. Another long week followed the insanity of that weekend, as Darrell, Tyler and I finished our magazines at 10 a.m. Friday morning. We had been in the Student Media Center for more than 25 consecutive hours working on that alone. No complaints, I promise.
9.Earlier that morning, most of the staff went to watch the last press of the school year. Same as last year, another passing of an era. Here’s to next year. There’s more to this story, but I need to leave out a few choice details of that evening to protect the innocent…and the non-innocent.
10. Wearily went home and crashed for about two hours.
11. Woke up, cleaned a little, received a text message announcing there would be a party at my apartment for Cinco de Mayo (I didn’t have a clue as to the date at this point). Great.
12. Went to the Student Media party at Ralph’s, where I was entertained by a few blitzed coworkers. For their sake, I won’t go into detail, but I had a good laugh. It was even funnier talking to them about these conversations later the next week.
13. Returned for Cinco de Mayo party at the apartment, but not before I went to pick up limes and Solo cups. Returned and made copious amounts of frozen Margaritas for the party-goers. I did not partake in any because I had to leave early the next morning for home. Watched three episodes of “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” thus making Bryan Doyle the most entertaining person at our apartment that evening.
14. After a few hours of shuteye, I tore out of Oxford and headed South down the double-nickel. Jazzfest was calling my name. I arrived at the airport in Kenner just in time to see my sister’s plane land. Found a seat close to the stage (amazingly), setup with the million other Parrotheads, ate a little crawfish and sang every Jimmy Buffett song I knew. He put on one helluva show. And I conclude that Memphis in May and Jazzfest cannot be compared; both have their positives and negatives.
15. Went to the Quarter that night, went to the piano bar at Pat O’Brien’s, ate Beignet’s at Café Du Monde and became a tourist in my own hometown. It was all a microcosm of the surrounding world. We had Jazzfest where just eight months earlier five feet of water stood. Many of the areas around the Quarter and the festival are still dead. But life goes on everywhere else. It’s sad and amazing at the same time.
16. Finals week. This concludes the highlights. By this point, my body was wondering what the hell happened to me. I’m still sleeping it all off. Would I do it again? You betcha.
Ole Miss will play the winner of the Alabama/LSU game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. FSN will carry the game in Oxford as well as nationally I do believe. History says we're in a pretty good position. History also says the we beat Florida twice last year to make it to the championship, so anything's possible.
I rest my case.
