And I need someone to try this out for me because a) I don't have the opportunity to have this kind of discussion over here and b) I don't like getting punched.
The heads of the U.S. Military are coming out and
arguing for the elimination of Don't Ask, Don't Tell so that gays and lesbians can serve openly in the Services. This is, of course, FAAABULOUS!
There are those, of course, who aren't willing to let this happen, and they're fighting back against it. The argument that keeps coming up, though, is the "morale and unit cohesion" one. The idea is that if Private Ryan knows that Private Johnson might be thinking about Private Ryan's johnson, then he won't be able to focus on the task at hand, his performance will suffer, and the next thing you know the whole country is taken over by the Gay Communists.
So if you get into a Gays in the Military discussion with someone, and they bring up the "morale and unit cohesion" argument, here's the response I'd like you to try:
"Huh. I didn't know our soldiers were such pussies."
Hopefully they'll give you a chance to explain before they punch you.
Think about it: our military men 'n women are trained to function in situations that would leave people like you and me curled up in a ball, peeing ourselves. They go through rigorous training to make sure they're able to focus on the task at hand. The soldiers who are actually in combat are willingly risking life and limb while they're out there, and are willing to do something that is considered morally reprehensible in civilian society - kill other human beings.
Do you really think a person like that is going to crumble if one of the guys in his squad thinks he has a cute ass?
So, the next time you're discussing DA/DT, ask the other person why they think our soldiers are such fragile little flowers and see what happens. Bonus points if you use the argument on someone actively serving in the military - I'll even come sign your cast.
