The Pew Research group decided to do a little poll on approval of torture vs religiosity, and guess what they found....
CNN: Survey: Support for terror suspect torture differs among the faithful More than half of people who attend services at least once a week -- 54 percent -- said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is "often" or "sometimes" justified. Only 42 percent of people who "seldom or never" go to services agreed, according the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.
White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified -- more than six in 10 supported it.
Whoever wrote the FARK headline for this got it just right, so I'll quote that:
"Jesus facepalms, glares disapprovingly through the little hole."
Yeah. When you worship a guy who was brutally tortured, you might want to rethink supporting torture. I have a feeling that if Jesus were to come back, he'd probably come down pretty hard on the "no torture" side of the debate.
The much more interesting question, of course, is why. I'd work out a bullshit answer for that, but I have to get ready for work. If you can think of why people who allegedly follow the "Prince of Peace" would be more likely to condone torture, let me know.
