USA Today:
Poll shows support for torture among Southern Evangelicals Nope, not making this up. A large number of people whose spiritual leader was horribly tortured before his excruciatingly painful death are themselves fine with torture. According to the article, 57% of respondents said that the use of torture was justified to get information from suspects.
But - and this is the funny part - when they were asked, "the U.S. government should not use methods against our enemies that we would not want used on American soldiers" - which sounds a whole lot like that proverb "Do to others as you would have them do to you," which was said by... umm.... I dunno,
some guy - the number dropped. It's like they said, "Oh yeah - we're Christians. Forgot all about that...." Either that or, "Yeah, we're raging hypocrites - what of it?"
I'd like to see this study expanded to other denominations. My guess is that the less Fundamentalist/Evangelical strains of Christians - the ones who have a well-honed sense of irony - would probably be less against torture, but you never know....
