I just got back from watching Hitchhiker's Guide - opening day, and the theater was about half full. Although, no one laughed as much as I did....
The movie did pretty much what I expected it would - keep the essential frame of the story, but diverge in a few places. The detour to Viltvodel 6 was unexpected, but John Malkovich was really creepy, so I liked him. My theory, as I mentioned to
lyonshall this morning, is this - every time the story is put into a new medium, it changes slightly. They do things in a different order, or they add new events or take away old ones. Knowing that, I had very few problems with the movie. The love story aspect seemed a bit forced, but I guess some studio exec was choking on his cigar when he heard that there'd be no romantic interest.
There was so many interesting easter eggs in this film for the hard-core fans. The jewelled crabs of Vogsphere, for example, were nice to see, as was the seat that the Vogon captian was sitting on. The use of the original Marvin suit from the TV show made me happy, and I'm pretty sure that the place where they landed on Vogsphere was the location they used as Magrathea in the TV show (thus Zaphod's continued exhortations that they were on Magrathea). And I can't say for certain until I get my hands on the DVD, but I'm 99 44/100% sure that, during the "get life going" montage at the very end, they showed the interior of Kyoto Station.
Zaphod was fantastic, and kind of what I imagine Dubya's true soul might look like. Arthur Dent's reaction on the factory floor of Magrathea was disturbingly accurate. I do think that Marvin was a little bit too cute. He is a prototype, and I thought he should look rougher. Deep Thought was awesome. I want a little Deep Thought statue for my desk. Anyone know where I can score one? And I will most certainly be picking up the soundtrack. I have the closing song running through my head....
Anyway, a fun movie. I'm happy.
