Writer's Block: Infamous

Dec 07, 2008 09:05

I think most people of my age group will agree that Sept 11, 2001 is our version of Pearl Harbor and the Kennedy assasignation.  If asked, the majority of us can tell you exactly where we were when we heard what had happened.  We remember our reactions to the news as well as the people around us.

I woke up to my stupid morning show blathering on about a terrorist attack on US soil and I clearly remember thinking 'you fucking losers, some things aren't funny.'  I turned them off and went about my morning.  I got in the car and turned on another radio station because I was determined to not listen to them ever again.  Every station I could understand was full of the news and I realized it was the truth.  America had been attacked and it seemed that our world was about to change, most likely for the very worst.

I went into work and was met by my AGM as I entered my dept.  She said we were closed except for essential personnel.  All of our call centers were closed across the country and if I needed to, I could go home as well.  I should only stay if I thought I can handle what is going on and remain functional.  She was very concerned for her people but also for the people that were going to need us to be there.  My team and the one right next to us were the only ones that stayed open that day.  We brought a TV on wheels over to our dept and watched the news all day long.  I kept it together for my shift, but when I got home I remember climbing into my bed and sobbing.  It was one of 2 days in my life that I remember being completely terrified.

Maybe something to know about me, I was raised very close to the Nellis AFB in Vegas.  All of my sisters have married into the Air Force (some more than 1x) or Navy.  I am also related to a large number of police officers.  At one point, the entire police force of a small city in No Nv (both of them) were my relatives.  I am patriotic.  I believe in my country, even when it fucks up royally.  I believe we (currently) have just about the best game in town.  I am not one of those people that will say I am Canadian because Americans aren't well liked.  What a fucking cop out.  There are some places that are better at this and some that are better at that.  Lord knows we need some serious work done on how we handle our own people's needs!

Anyway..  that is my day of infamy.
