WoW: World of Warcraft Open Beta Ends

Nov 19, 2004 01:12

While I was waiting to recover from my wisdom teeth extractions and for the pain to abate somewhat, I have been spending my time playing in the World of Warcraft (Wow) open beta (OB). As open betas go, it wasn’t too bad but I have seen better. OB only lasted around a week, wish it had been longer, and much of that time the servers (in particular ( Read more... )

I did every quest (I was horde, there were way less quests at the time and it was much slower to level) and I had mastered about 5 tradeskills (which are now called professions and capped at two). My /played time was approx 10 days when I hit 50. I also had every area explored, including alliance areas. In the end I just sat my Shaman in stormwind and dueled everyone and never lost. Eventually GMs got pissed at me and banned me from Stormwind and put extra guards in there. WoW also lacks immersion. It's all instanced, and it's all soloable. Why would I want to play an online single player game?

I played Everquest for 4 years. I think the leveling pace there was good (before the new expansions). However, I don't really care about leveling speed so much as I care about how it is relative to the amount of content and amount of work I'm doing to gain these levels.

I played lineage 2 beta and it was horrible. It just involved me killing the same monsters over and over then having ~10 minutes of downtime. I got to level 19 and quit.

I was going to get EQ2 but then I played Guild Wars and decided to preorder that. I'm already hearing bad things about EQ2, despite it being new and full of fanbois. Plus it's made by SOE. SOE ruined Everquest and has made shit like SWG and Planetside. EQOA was ok but if EQ2 is similar to EQOA, I'm not going to spend a monthly fee on it. In the end, I think Guild Wars will beat all of the MMORPGs because it's less of a commitment. It's geared towards casual players but at the same time it's skill based, meaning the more practice you get, the better you get (aka hardcore players). Plus it won't be something that I feel I have to play 10 hours a day or I'm wasting my money on it (no monthly fee). I suggest buying the Guild Wars preorder to be able to play it the first weekend of each month until it's released. Amazon.com is selling the preorder package for just $1 (which comes to about $3-4 with shipping).

Like I said, I am a slow player. I hope you enjoy Guild Wars. I also played in Lineage II beta and thought the game sucked, but if you are looking for a game that will take long to lvl that game will do it. I want to point out that many people think that lvling in EQ sucks (too slow). I never thought that, but it seems a lot of people like easier lvling.

I like to solo. I have grouped one too many times with people that either A) Don't know how to play their characters. B) Are stupid. C) Both. So I only group when I have too. Personal preference.

Sounds like you wouldn't like EQ2, but the game is geared more towards grouping then soloing. I only played it a few days in beta so I don't know that much about the game dynamics. I know it has tons of quests, harder lvling than WoW, crafting, and your own room and pets to decorate. I am pretty sure it is going to be the MMORPG I choose to play but that is because I enjoyed it and it seems to suit my tastes best.

If you like Guild Wars, stick with that and have fun. The point of these games are to have fun. I don't understand people complaining about a game and yet playing it 24/7.
