Wikipedia:
A common mistake made by inexperienced fan fiction writers is to believe that writing an AU fan fiction means that the writer can acceptably and drastically alter the personalities of major characters; in fact, the point of AU fan fiction is that the personality remains as much the same as possible, and it is only the situation that is different.
So.
What do y'all think of that?
What I think is that apart from the word 'inexperienced', I could have submitted that paragaph to Wiki. This is always been the way I've seen AU writing, but the longer I hang out in Teh Internets, the more I realise that lots and lots and lots of other people see it very differently. Which is cool, of course, but my question has always been that if the characters no longer bear any resemblence to the characters on the screen, then why on earth am I, as a fan of those characters, reading it? Apart from the lolz, of course.
