“No more, I’ll get fat,” she protests laughingly.
He swallows the last mouthful himself, his words faintly sticky with pastry and chocolate. “I wouldn’t care.”
“I would,” she insists, then a soft blush touches her face. “Unless it was for a very good reason.”
Grinning at the thought, he kisses her, one hand on her belly, tasting sugar and cinnamon and chocolate and a promise sweeter than all those things.
Sucre wakes with a start, opening his eyes onto the grimy half-light of his cell, his mouth dry, his hands empty.
“Fish?”
“What?”
“We’re going over the wall soon, right?”
