Back from San Francisco...and in Hell

OMG the heat is very, very much on. I didn't get full-fledged sleep last night/this morning either, but I did do a little napping. I'm going to go to bed early tonight...and I do mean early...but it is evil HOT and I might not be able to sleep thanks to that. I feel like Alex in that one episode of MTV's Downtown. The problem I have with pedestal fans is, unless you're standing up all the time, they don't blow on you. My box fans blow on me pretty well when I'm sitting down, and when not aimed directly at me, they keep me cool with minimal air on.

(When I had guests a few years ago, I pulled my mattress off my box springs and set it on the floor of my front bedroom. That's where I sleep now. In a few years I may be able to afford a used queen size mattress and springs, and sleep in a real bed again. As for now, I'm at ground level, which helps because that's where the cool air lies.)

Another nice thing about box fans. On cool days you can set one in the window to blow out, open all the windows and ventilate the house. It's a necessity after setting off fumigators. (I understand now that there's a little box fan that promises to be "weatherproof" so's it doesn't short out if it gets a little wet.)

My dad had a monster fan, the kind they use to ventilate garages, mounted in the kitchen window. A belt-driven fan with a 5 horsepower motor! It really sucked air through the entire house, and got rid of the cooking smoke like crazy.
