I've always been fascinated by this country. It seems so separate from the rest of the world, and yet has a culture that is closely linked to ours in the States and in Europe. At the same time, it has maintained its sense of primitive and wild with the outback, it's rain forests in the north, and (of course) the Great Barrier Reef. It is definitely one of my life goals to visit this country and scuba dive off the coast. Might get eaten by a shark, but oh well.
- differential geometry:
I've always had a strong interest in general relativity, cosmology, and all that fancy physics stuff from high school and college. The downside is that I could never understand the math that was going on behind these ideas, and it's always been a barrier to me deepening my knowledge of what these theories are saying. Soon after I graduated, though, I was finally introduced to differential geometry and some of the related mathematics that form the foundation of theoretical physics, and though I still have a hell of a time understanding it, I keep forcing myself to go back and work through some ideas and problems in an attempt to really appreciate what's going on in the universe. - fox trot:
One of my favortie comics, along with Calvin and Hobbes and Dilbert. I haven't kept up on Bill Amend's recent work, but my brother owns must of the old collections and I keep returning to them again and again.
Also, Bill got his B.S. in physics. Where'd you think Jason came from? - hawaii:
I visited Hawaii once, when my Aunt G was stationed at Hickam Air Force Base, and I'd love to return at some point. Simply a beautiful archipelago with pleasant weather and wonderful places to dive. The nature hikes and WWII historical museums are quite interesting, too. - mathematics:
Duh :-P. But seriously, my interest in math actually spawned from Ian Malcom's character in Jurassic Park (it was kinda cool to see a mathematical theory become a central theme in a popular book). It sorta evolved from there, though, once I started studying physics. It's just fascinating to have a subject that is both rigorously precise and wildly imaginative. Also, when you combine it with science, you get a window to the universe that reveals a deep, immense, and intricate structure that is not only exciting but also humbling at the same time. So I consider myself pretty damn lucky for the opportunity to devote my life to it's study. I just wish I was a bit better at it . . . - noao:
The National Optical Astronmy Observatory was my employer for the better part of two years. They are a branch of the NSF that operates with AURA to help fund the nation's optical astronomy observatories (such as the NSO, Kitt Peak, APO, basically anything that's not a radio telescope. That's the NRAO's job). - palau:
Another item on the list of diving wet-dream locations. An archipelago in the middle of the pacific where the narrow channels between islands are populated with sharks and other exotic, dangerous creatures. Good fun! - scuba diving:
I always had an interest in diving, but never quite got around to it (I mean, I live in the freakin' desert). My opportunity came, though, when I was in Puerto Rico for the summer after graduation. Our student group managed a deal with one of the Arecibo dive shops to take a scuba class, and I think I was probably the single most excited person in the bunch to do this.
The only dives I ever went on were my certification dives, all 4 of 'em (spread over just 2 days), but that was enough to get me hooked. I'm hoping to start diving again as soon as I finally finish school and can afford to live closer to the coast. - thunderstorms:
Are awesome. That's all I gotta say. - u2:
I'm not a music connoisseur, unlike the rest of you guys. My music tastes are pretty simple. I've got a thing for Underworld/Orbital/The Orb as some of you know (blame Rob), but I do like some non boop-beep-boop music. U2 and Springsteen probably top my more contemporary tastes, back from when alternative rock didn't suck.
