A/N: Sorry for the long hiatus. It's been months, almost a year since I've last updated this work of mine. I've been busy. RL had been a bitch. But I love life all the same =) I bet I've lost readers, couldn't help it, and I would like to end this as soon as possible. It had dragged for too long a time, and I'm glad the story could end within forty chapters. So yes, this is the very last chapter. The writing style would be very different from the last thirty-nine chapters. It was after all written with a very different perspective and let's not forget about the time gap. It might seem a sloppy ending but it's not. Trust me, I've re-written this so many times I've lost count and even had to drag it out to fifty chapters at one point of time. Instead I've chosen to narrate the story and what the various individuals were going through to keep this short and sweet.
A big thank you to all those who had been reading the story so far, this is finally the end.

::Conversation 40::

I vividly recall a certain Akanishi Jin slipping and cheated on Kamenashi Kazuya. Kamenashi, being a perfectionist could not bear the fact that her relationship was being tainted, and had swiftly initiated a break up. Let's just say both of them had it rough after the incident and the love they had for each other was very real and very deep, maybe deeper than what they had thought. Akanishi snapped. He sold Kamenashi out, and the result was a huge scandal involving not only Kamenashi and himself, but also his best friend Yamashita Tomohisa, and love rival Brandon Blaire.

Things spun out of control.

It was blown out of proportion and it was generally destructive towards their image individually, especially that of Kamenashi. It never looked good on a woman to be picking out different guys to go out with within the same circle of friends, not that it was the truth. Brandon's parents had caught wind of the situation and they too tried to make use of the scandal to their advantage. For one Brandon was due back in New York and they would like Brandon to marry Kazuya. Their rationale was to protect Kazuya from further attacks of the media and to sort out the romantic entanglement of the group. As of the moment, Kamenashi had agreed to to the arrangement, totally ruining the selfish plans of Akanishi to use the scandal to propose to Kazuya and keep her for himself.

The previous chapter ends with the group of them, Akanishi, Yamashita, Brandon, Kamenashi and Renchi gathering in Kamenashi's grandmother's apartment, trying to sort things out. A press conference would be held soon to announce the official end of Brandon Blaire's modeling career, as well as to minimize the effects of the current scandal which had been plaguing the front pages of tabloids for weeks now. This chapter would begin after the end of that particular conference, when the group of them were once again gathered in Kamenashi's apartment.

It was awkward. Throughout the years, many things had happened, and this group of 5 friends had all had romantic feelings for one another in a sense. Yamashita once crushed on Kamenashi. His fiancee, Renchi had held a torch for Brandon for a very long time. Akanishi and Brandon were still love rivals. Kamenashi had broken up with her first love Akanishi, and was currently engaged to Brandon. Things couldn't be more complicated.

To make matters worse, there was actually nothing worth talking about either as they rested comfortably on the L-shaped leather sofa. Brandon had his legs stretched out and was resting against Kazuya who was fiddling with the seams of her dress. Renchi was seated between Kazuya and Yamapi and she was holding hands with the latter. Jin was at the far end of the sofa, not looking at any of them. The mood was, however, less than comfortable. In fact, there was a certain helplessness permeating through the air.

It was obvious that there was no going back between Kamenashi and Akanishi. Kamenashi was unwilling for one. Secondly, she was adamant to be together with Brandon, and no amount of talking could change her mind. All of them had their shot at making her change her mind for the past few days. None had succeeded.

Akanishi was Yamashita's best friend since forever. Brandon was a friend he had come to treasure. In fact, he was the only person he had kept in contact with while on hiatus. Yet, he didn't want to be favoring any of them, he only wanted Kamenashi to choose as she deemed fit. He only wanted what's best for her.

Renchi had always wanted Kamenashi to choose Brandon. She had pushed for it when they were still in High School. She was always harping on it whenever she's got the chance, even when she herself was very much in love with Brandon. But those were merely the times when she was being selfish and insensitive to Kamenashi's true feelings. When Kamenashi decided to come to Japan, she knew her best friend was in love with Akanishi and obviously still have feelings for Akanishi right now. Her friend had once been deeply in love with that guy. It wasn't something you could get over with overnight. She didn't need to be around to know how broken her friend would have looked when she first learned of Akanishi's betrayal. She's engaged to Yamashita, but she still have feelings for Brandon, and probably will always have feelings for him, just as the latter would always care deeply for Kamenashi.

Akanishi knew he screwed up big time and only had himself to blame for his current predicament. Maybe life is fair after all. You can be good-looking, talented, and rich all at the same time, but that didn't mean you could always get what you want. For Akanishi, he couldn't keep the love of his life by his side. If the situation was to remain status quo, the love of his life would be married to another guy in the near future. He once thought he could have anything in the world as long as he wanted it. But life is fair after all, and of all things, it chose to refuse Akanishi the love of his life. The one thing he wanted the most. With it he could have given up on the rest of his other worldly possessions. Life, however, had refused him.

Brandon, well Brandon was still very much disturbed by Kamenashi's decision. He just couldn't believe she would be willing to entrust him with her life. He still couldn't believe she had agreed to marry him. But hell, Kamenashi is his life. If this is what she wants, he would give it to her. When she needed him to send her along to meet the love of her life, he was there. When she needed him to be the substitute, he was there. When she needed him to be that listening ear, he was there. When she needed his liver, he willingly gave it to her. If she had ever wanted his life, he would not have hesitated to give it to her either. Kamenashi is his everything, and the only thing he had ever wanted. Everything he did, he had her happiness in mind. He loved her, is still in love with her and that was all to it.

It would be a lie to say that Kamenashi had gotten over Akanishi. He was the first she had ever loved. And no, she highly doubted she had fallen for Brandon romantically yet. But yes, she is set on marrying that guy. Why you may ask. I bet she would reply with a “Why not?” Brandon is a nice guy. He loves her. He was always there for her. He had never failed her. So why shouldn't the nice guy get the girl? She still loves Akanishi, but they were not compatible. She was unable to give Akanishi what he needed, and the other could not give her that feeling of security anymore either. She wouldn't go as far as to say that it was a mistake right from the start. They had a fulfilling relationship after all. But, if she had to choose, she would choose Brandon. Brandon was the only one whom she deemed to be marriage material. She was being pragmatic. Kamenashi had always been rational and pragmatic. Between love and her career, she had chosen her career, her academic achievements over Akanishi at times. Falling in love with Akanishi was the only exception, an abnormality to her usual actions. But who ever said falling in love is rational? She had loved, once.

Akanishi was there, at the conference too. Frankly speaking, he was there to help if things were to go out of hand. How would he be able to help he wasn't sure, but he would have tried his best to protect Kamenashi and Yamashita at the very least, should Brandon have any problems handling the press. He was very much ashamed of himself, the cause of the commotion. But of course, he wasn't needed. The person handling the situation was Brandon, after all.

Brandon had tried to adhere to the truth as best as he could, during the press conference. He had answered every single question the reporters asked. He told the press about how Akanishi and Kamenashi had been a couple all these years until recently when they had to break up due to irreconcilable differences. When being asked to elaborate, he mentioned Akanishi respecting Kamenashi's wishes to pursue her career in New York, where she belonged and that it wasn't fair for them to be holding each other back. The reporters were skeptical, but he couldn't care less. When asked if he himself had ever had feelings for Kamenashi, he answered she was his high school crush with a genuine smile. He tried to keep Yamashita out of the love equation and only mentioned they were close friends who always hung out together.

He didn't mind the reporters being pushy and respected the fact that they were sent here to churn out juicy articles to boost sales of their tabloids. He didn't care if what he said would be contorted into ugly accusations. What mattered to him right there and then was to tell the truth as best as he could. Forgive him for white-washing certain details, he just didn't want any of them to be burdened by this scandal any longer. His manager didn't stop him, his mother's personal assistant didn't stop him either, so he was quite sure he wasn't out of line after all.

Renchi was the one who couldn't stand the silence and did something about it. She text both her fiance and Brandon for help. Yes, she text both of them even though they were practically sitting next to each other. Somehow or other, Brandon had swept Kamenashi off her feet, Renchi and Yamashita had wrestled Akanishi and they had successfully locked them in the art studio. The studio being the nearest room to the living room and the only place that could be locked only from the outside. They weren't trying to set the two of them up. The last thing they want was for the two of them to sleep together and make things even more complicated than it was. What they were aiming for was for the two to have a good talk together. For them to find a certain kind of reconcilement, so that they could at least be comfortable in each others' presence.

After knowing the true intention of their friends, the two of them calmed down considerably and took to sitting on the floor beside each other, and leaning against the door. Akanishi turned to look at Kamenashi, only to discover the that the latter had been staring at him for quite some time. He smirked, taunting the other with the question of what had she been looking at. Kamenashi merely shrugged and answered how she was marveling at his beauty and thought it a dream to have ever been loved by the man in front of her, her idol who had then became her love. Akanishi loved the way her eyes were so gentle, so filled with admiration when she had announced the fact that he was her idol and her love. He reached out a hand to caress the side of her face. She recoiled initially, before finally acceding to his request when the latter pleaded with sorrowful eyes. The caress later became a hug, with both of them holding on to the other tightly. Clingy on to each other for the last time, both of them knew in their hearts that this would finally be the end. This time, both of them were at peace and genuinely wanted things to end between the two of them for now.

It was Akanishi who first pulled away, smiling bitterly at the other. Kamenashi rolled her eyes and urged the other not to be so sad. She wanted to see him smiling, dazzling her like he always did on stage. She then hurried off to pick up her camera and randomly started snapping photos of Akanishi. The man tried to shake her off, shrinking behind canvases, claiming he was looking like crap. The lady merely chuckled and saw it as an encouragement to take more pictures. The Akanishi Jin being camera shy? Better get a good shot of this rarely seen side of him, and to embarrass him for life. After about two hours, when the other three was back from dinner, they had opened the door to see the couple, both spotting acrylic paint and had taken a considerable number of pictures together. The other three joined in as well, and everyone had their chance being in front of and also behind the camera, as well as splashing paint on each other.

So came the time when both Kamenashi and Brandon would be going back to the west. Back to their homes, and back to their parents. Yamashita and Renchi went along with them as well. Yamashita to continue with his job in New York until Renchi graduated, before returning to the entertainment scene. Akanishi, well, when things died down, when he was once again sober, he became the usual Akanishi who shone on the stage. When Kamenashi decided to leave for good, a part of him died. It wasn't all bad news though, Kamenashi had after all taught him the meaning of Love.

When I first had started out on this journey with these people, I thought Kamenashi would end up marrying Akanishi. I had sincerely hoped so. But that's life for you. It just doesn't always end up the way we would like things to be. If Kamenashi could get over the fact of Akanishi's betrayal, and if only Akanishi would try to work things out when things first started going wrong, it was possible for a patch-up. Things might not have turned out this way. But all those were merely if's, our hypothesis based on selfish beliefs. We can't even be sure that they would also be able to overcome problems in the future peacefully together. Akanishi and Kamenashi, maybe they were never meant to be. At the very least, when they parted at the departure hall of Narita Airport, they were at peace with each other. At the very least, when they meet over a year later at Yamashita and Renchi's wedding, they were still friends. At the very least, things didn't stay ugly, and they were all happy with what they have at that moment.

In life, you win some and lose some. All of them had their own share of successes and regrets. Akanishi had his successful career. Kamenashi had her career, was happily married to Brandon but kept her maiden name just cause Brandon feel that his last name just didn't quite go along with her name. The relationship between Brandon and Kamenashi very much stayed the same, only that they are now officially part of the same family. Things didn't go all that well with Yamashita and Renchi though. They were married, then divorced. In a sense, they were still together, they still lived together and they had a kid. They still love each other, but just couldn't stay married with each other. Don't ask me what's wrong, I'm not them, I didn't choose to end things the way they did. But rest assure they were happier after the divorce and became closer than they ever were.

So yeah, that's the end of the story and I hope you guys had enjoyed it as much as I had. I think this is the best way to end things and it turned out well for me. Akanishi could very well end up with Kamenashi again ten or twenty years down the road. But as of now, they are not together anymore. Just friends and nothing overboard.
