I heard a story on NPR about people that make lists. I'm not good at lists, never have been. But apparently people find that merely the act of writing down a to-do list raises the chances of to-dos getting done. I'm going to try a little experiment, here's my first list of the new year, my 2008 goals.
1. Conquer
Triangle Pose It's a bitch. It's pretty much impossible to do this pose perfectly so I'm going to define "conquer" as that moment when I'm in class and think "fuck yeah, I did it!" and want to jump up and down a little bit but won't because that would disturb everyones "focus." Do you think it's bad to curse in your head when you do yoga?
2. Lose 20 Pounds
I was going to say 10, but 10 is less than one pound a month. If I'm going to shoot for one I might as well shoot for two. I've lost 20 before (then gained the fuckers back in my "party phase"), I can do it again.
3. Drink Less
I've been working on this gradually over the past few years (since that aforementioned "party phase"). Giving up the booze is unrealistic, I love drinking with my friends and during the rock and roll shows, but the less of it I consume the less it tends to hinder my other goals.
4. Have Less Hangovers
While drinking less will accomplish this, so will drinking smarter :)
5. Shop More Often At Consignment Shops
I rarely have enough well-fitting, stylish clothes. I also have clothes I need to get rid of. I think about going to consignment shops often but more often than not find an excuse not to. Like a hangover.
5. Get Control of my Finances
You would think that as someone who has been in banking for 6 or so years and in lending for over half that time I would manage my finances down to the penny. Not the case. I still spend more than I earn. I have too much debt. I have Quicken and don't even use it. As of today my total debt balance is $13,296.52. Though, I'm not brave enough to actually admit how much of that is credit card debt. It should be none. By this time next year, it will be less.
6. Update My Goal List Status Once a Month
I'll have to admit to myself, and those of you that are paying attention, how things are progressing.
Interesting how interconnected my goals are:
Drinking less > less hangovers > I'm more likely to go to Bikram and conquer triangle.
Drinking less > less money spent on booze > more can go towards my debt.
Drinking less > less empty calories consumed > easier to lose weight > easier to do triangle pose.
Less hangovers > more weekend Bikram and more triangle pose > easier to lose weight.
Less hangovers, a trimmer body, and more control of my finances > more consignment clothes shopping.
And so on and so forth...
These goals are pretty vague. Some will stay that way. Some will become more defined as the year goes on.
