Ready Your Good Plan

The title of this post is what is delightfully written on the cover of the little notebook I use to do daily to-do lists. While I do get more done using a to-do list, it's astonishing just how often my week careers wildly off the rails, leaving the things I thought I was going to do in the dust. Thus far this week I have:

- Chipped a tooth and had to race to the dentist

- Had to call a repair guy when my fridge died, then when it was apparently mortally wounded had to buy a new fridge

- Had a contract we have said no to several times come to life and shamble up to us yet again just when we thought we had as much work as we wanted. (It's a very high-profile government project which would be a massive, massive pain to do. But they really don't like hearing "No"...)

None of these things were in my notebook. I laugh scornfully at naively innocent past me, who thought on Monday morning that I would have no trouble getting through the things I'd written on my list.

I am at least grateful that just after Christmas, sick of yet again not being able to fit everything Christmaseque into the fridge, I bought a second fridge and put it in the garage. Although I've used the spare fridge for overflow several times, that hasn't stopped me from feeling guilty for what seems like a pretty profligate purchase. Well, I can tell you that when my main fridge expired, that guilt evaporated instantly. I've recouped probably half of the cost of the spare fridge (which to be fair was a cheapie) rescuing a fridge-full of stuff that would otherwise currently be residing in my kitchen bin.
