Two and a half years

Hello, LJ. Apparently when I'm home from work for multiple days because of the snow, I try to remember passwords to old accounts I haven't used in years. LJ looks just like I left it, except that many of you seem to be gone (like me).

I have come to the conclusion that blogs and blogging are not my thing, but since I went to all the trouble to log in, I may as well write something.

My life has changed immensely since I last posted in June 2009. I found a new life-eating hobby, I moved back to Seattle proper, I met dozens of amazing new friends, and I started preparing my homeschooled teenager to actually go to school someday. I'm happier, healthier, and independent again.

I landed in the world of roller derby shortly after my last post in 2009, and shortly after directing what turned out to be an "unsatisfying" show. I knew I needed something new, and I found Jet City through a few well-timed circumstances. I was instantly hooked. I quickly learned that I haven't changed that much since high school, though, and I'm still not cut out to play a competitive sport. I became a referee! My derby friends are the most amazing bunch of people. You know that 10%/90% statistic? Where I love 10% of the people in the world more than anything, and the other 90% I really don't ever feel a need to interact with? Derby people are the reverse for me. 90% of them are smart, funny, fascinating people, and there are very few I come across that I wouldn't want to spend more time with.

I sometimes miss theatre, but I haven't been willing to take 6 weeks off derby to direct a show since I started it! I realize that getting a new theatre gig might be a challenge if I try to rejoin that world in the future - the big blank in my resume won't help me - but I'm OK with that. I enjoy seeing my friends' shows, and if I really need to direct, I know the right opportunity will present itself.

I live in a big house in South Seattle now. The friends who got me here are moving on, but I'm staying put and filling the house up with more (new) friends. Terra loves living in the city, Bouncer (the dog) loves having an off-leash park right down the street, and I love everything about having made this move. My soul needed it.

Terra has a larger social group now and plans to attend high school year after next. This is a big, scary move for her, but she's grown so much since she found derby, too (she plays for a junior league and is currently captain of her team), that I know she'll succeed despite the challenges she'll face. I'm very proud of her.

That's my new and improved life in a nutshell. I probably won't be back this way for awhile, so pleasant travels through life to you all!
