When scientists reduced the dopamine levels in the brains of female prairie voles, they were no longer faithful or choosy about their sexual partners. In fact, they slutted it up.

No wonder couples in long-distance relationships tend to battle the sexual doldrums better than their cohabitating counterparts: Absence doesn't just make the heart grow fonder, it makes the brain produce higher dopamine levels. Says Helen Fisher, "When a reward is delayed, dopamine-producing cells in the brain increase their work, pumping out more natural stimulants to energize the brain, focus attention and drive the pursuer to strive even harder to acquire a reward: in this case, winning one's sweetheart. Dopamine, thy name is persistence."
