So instead of going to Egypt, Deedee and I went to Tunisia where her Dad lives. It was much much cheaper than Egypt would have been and it was really cool. We had some issues with the tickets and we were scrambling around at the last minute because our tickets had not come in the mail on time. We called the airline and finally they told us that Deedee´s ticket was waiting for her in Barcelona and that my flight had been canceled because something went wrong with my credit card. That was annoying becuase I received a confirmation email about the flight and never heard anything that my card didn´t go through. Soo at that last minute, I had to go to a travel agency nearby and they had to book the flight for me since you couldnt book the flight within 3 days of departure online.
We left at 1am Thursday (4/5) morning from the bus station and arrived in Barcelona just under 6 hours later. We got to Tunisia around noon and immediately took a nap. Deedee´s mom came in on Friday and on Saturday we headed to Kairouan for the day. It was a pretty cool market place and it had some amazing mosques. We got some fun henna tattoos too. On Sunday we went to El Jem, which is this roman colosseum that was really amazing. Outside of it, there was this camel you could ride so we did that. That is actually what my profile picture is right now- me riding a camel with El Jem in the background.
During the week Deedee and I didn´t do much except wake up at 3pm and watch soccer and music videos on tv all day until we went to bed at 3am. On Thursday we took a bus do Hamammet, a beach town and we were really excited but it ended up being cloudy and super windy so we didnt get much beach action. We went to this kids theme park and took a horse and buggy tour ride around the town. On Friday we went to Hamammet again but this time we went to a place where you take a bath using the water from the mountains and its actually really warm. However, we were told we were getting massages. So when we found out we were supposed to bathe publicly without being told to bring bathing suits, Deedee and I decided against it. Apparently its really amazing. Maybe next time.
After leaving that place, we headed to a town nearby to Tunis where we were staying, and we checked out the gorgeous view of the coast. It was so pretty you couldnt see where the water ended and the sky began. Soo beautiful.
Deedee´s mom left on Sunday and after seeing her off, we went to Bizerte, a really cool harbor about 60km from Tunis. We wanted to go to this restaurant and eat some fish but they had just closed for lunch so we heading back and ate at a restaurant in Tunis.
We left on Monday morning super early and got into Barcelona around 11. When we took a train from teh airport to the bus station and we had to take an escalator to get up to the main floor. Everyone had all their luggage and the escalator was really crowded and the guy 2 in front of me had some issues getting out of the way after he got off of it. That made it really hard for the guy in front of me to get out of the way and then I had to work hard to dodge the traffic. Deedee almost fell and then all of the people behind us just start falling on the top of the escalator and it is just jamming and it keeps going and people are falling and screaming and yelling to stop the escalator and old ladies are being smashed under falling luggage it was really scary. Luckily after a little bit someone stopped the stairs and people could finally calm down and everyone was ok but it was really scary to watch.
Our bus ride from Barça to Pamplona was supposed to leave at 330 and be about 5.5 hours buuut it got there late and we got stopped for an hour at a gas station because the guys card wasnt working. Sooo our trip was just under 7.5 hours and we got home just before midnight and went straight to bed.
But semana santa was really fun and I came back with good souvenirs like a stuffed animal camel taht sings, a tshirt, a plate with my name in english and arabic, and a beautiful scarf. Now I´m back in school but the weather is gorgeous here so I´m not complaining. I´m heading to England again in May and I might go to Germany because Deedee has a cousin there. We shalll see!
