2008 Yuletide Recs - Part 1

Dec 30, 2008 13:53

This year, I decided to read alphabetically by title rather than by fandom so that I wouldn't burn out on any one fandom as I went along. It's working out well, but thus far I've only made it to the Bs. :)

1310 to Tarvehk (Diane Duane - Young Wizards)
I found this to be nicely done and in keeping with the books.

Adventure at Lindlea (Agatha Christie - Tommy and Tuppence Series)
Silly, fun and it even feels like canon.

The Adventure of the Expert Cracksman (Arthur Conan Doyle - Sherlock Holmes)
An excellent Holmes story.

Air and Space (Noel Streatfeild - Ballet Shoes)
I've always loved Petrova and I liked this look at her future.

All Cats are Grey (Ian Fleming - James Bond Series)
The moon landing and a clandestine meeting. Perfect.

All the Worlds (Diane Duane - Young Wizards)
Broad in scope, and very sweet.

All There is and More (Wall-E)
This was just plain adorable.

All Things Ancient and New (Mary Doria Russell - The Sparrow)
Short, but a very interesting piece.

Along the Fujiang (Barry Hughart - Master Li Series)
Excellent and entirely in keeping with the canon.

The Amazing Adventures of Hat Guy and the Girl Who Stole His Hat (xkcd)
xkcd fic! Well done xkcd fic! This has been recced all over the place and with good reason.

An Arrow at Dawn (Mulan)
A nice, short piece.

An Early Lesson (Anne McCaffrey - Dragonriders of Pern)
I recommend this if you liked the Harper Hall trilogy.

And do the other things (3rd Rock From the Sun)
A post-series story that was just fun and very well done to boot.

and his messengers of jazz (Michael Chabon - The Yiddish Policemen's Union)
Definitely an interesting, introspective piece.

and if they are not dead (Monster)
Set post-series, but I was able to read it without feeling too terribly spoiled. I really thought it was in keeping with the manga.

And You'll Glitter Like the Stars at Midnight (The Blues Brothers)
I thought this was a very good backstory for Jake and Elwood.

Bare (Blood Plus (tv))
I always forget just how dysfunctional Saya and Haji are until I watch the series or read a fic like this.

The Bleak Midwinter (Dorothy L Sayers - Lord Peter Wimsey Series)
Well done Wimseyfic.

The Boy With the Thorn In His Side (Diana Wynne Jones - The Chronicles of Chrestomanci)
I definitely recommend this if you like Cat Chant.

The Bruise Around the Wound (Fairy Tales (Trad))
A dark, modern look at a traditional story.

A Burden No More (Sandman)
I really liked the language in this one.

Burning in Red (Vampire Knight)
I'm not a huge fan of Vampire Knight, but this story was excellent.
