singingllama as part of a drabble challenge I asked for back in May and was one of the first stories I finished. It has been somewhat in limbo while I worked on the rest which was kind of a shame because I rather liked how this turned out despite it being pretty damned depressing.
It wasn't that they'd meant for it to happen, but there are some barriers, some tabus that crumble at the touch of pain. The act itself had been bittersweet and left the sort of aftertaste that didn’t lead to repeat performances. Ultimately, he knew it wasn't him she'd wanted, or even him she'd fucked. So when he woke to find his bed empty, he'd been entirely unsurprised.
Only, she wasn't actually gone.
He found her where he'd found him only days before; seated on the bridge smoking a cigarette and watching the Martian landscape drift past the horizon markers. The sound of his cane reverberated against the metal floor, making the space between them sound empty even as he closed the distance to stand behind her-again, as he had done only days before.
She looked up and met his eyes reflected in the glass, brazen as always. He was the one who broke away, turning and limping from the room without a glance back at the woman he'd clung to hours before.
