Character Information:

Character Name: Faith Lehane
Age: 23 at the time of her canon point
Canon: 4x13 of Angel “Salvage” I’ll just yank her from the end of the fight with the Beast. Before Angelus swoops in and stabs the rock with a piece of rock. She’ll fade out of consciousness and then wake up in her new fangled apartment wondering how she lucked out of a coma this time. She’ll be injured too, but she’ll probably try to just walk it off.
Appearance: Faith stands 5’5” and has a lean muscular frame. She has long brown hair that goes just past her shoulders. She usually wears this down, but it has an odd natural wave to it. (stylists on Angel make her pretty. We all know she never actually styles her own hair to be that nice.) She’s fond of deep reds when it comes to lipsticks, but other than that she’s usually pretty natural for her make-up too. She’s got dark brown eyes and a wicked smirk. She's usually dressed in dark jeans, boots, and a tank top/v-neck t-shirt. She favors leather and denim jackets.

Personality:

Faith Lehane is attitude... and then some more attitude. She’s attractive and she knows it, flaunts it, and uses it to her advantage whenever she can. In unfamiliar settings, if she can’t use her body to get her way, she’ll attempt to use her strength. Her strength, speed and anything else that she can associate with her being a Slayer for a long time was her key into anything she wanted. It put her above the rest, in a way a level of a higher society that she wasn’t part of before. She wasn’t the drunk mom passed out while the world passed her by, she was the one that could make the rules and make sure that the world would turn and look as she passed them by. People would push her and she would push back, harder. You couldn’t even sum it up as a typical rebellious streak, because hers involved ditching her entire life, crossing an entire country (by who knows what means) only a few days ahead of a pissed off Vampire, that previously had made lunch of her watcher, and subjecting an actual ‘Good Girl’ to her antics all in less than a week. She was going for the crown jewel of what not to do when you get Chosen.

She didn’t know any better though and she took that inexperience, that lack of wanting to actually try, and just shrugged it off believing that she had the natural born talent for killing things and if she got dead sooner rather than later - then so be it. Slayers died young all the time and at least she’d have done it her way.

Her way though was messy and a lot harder than she realized. Growing up without the good family around her, then showing up in the middle of Buffy’s world, it was a huge culture shock for her. She got to see what a caring, loving Mom would do for her daughter. She saw a Christmas that was actually a celebration for the family. As much as Faith wanted to have that life, she knew that it wasn’t meant for her. She envied Buffy and the life that she had. The thought that Buffy had the guy, the mom, the house and friends -- and had the Slayer thing down pat, it was this ideal image of what she could never be and she used that envy to motivate her. However, it wasn’t a go-get’em I’ll do better motivation that she had back then, it was a “I’ll take it, because I want it” motivation.

Even though, she’s misguided in her motivations -- she is able to be motivated and she does tend to focus on things to a near obsessive quality, even if it seems like she doesn’t care. Her entire plan that surrounds working for the Mayor, has one key ingredient to it, taking Angel away from Buffy and letting her have him. She wakes up from a coma and instead of getting the Hell out of dodge, she returns to where she felt safe and once more focuses on her envy for Buffy. Later when she is in prison, she focuses on her redemption, staying in prison, keeping to herself, not making trouble - because that’s what’s important to her at that time in her life.

Faith doesn’t handle guilt very well either. It’s very clear, very early on that she doesn’t know how to properly deal with guilt. Once more this probably comes from the idea that she didn’t have anyone to talk to about much of anything growing up, so she just lets things bottle up inside of her. Even easier than bottling it up, is ignoring it completely. When she makes a mistake and stabs the Mayor’s aide in that alley, she knows what she did was wrong, and she has a small level of remorse, but she’s never had to own up to it, she’s never had someone show her the mistake and ask her how she feels about it. By weighting it and dropping it into water, she gets it away from her. Putting distance there and making it a lot easier for her to just -- ignore it. Having Buffy there to constantly remind her of it, is probably a small part of why she eventually did turn herself in. Because, even though Angel made her realize that she needed help, it was once more that thought that Buffy’s life could’ve been hers if she’d just been different - that pushed her to change, even though she knew that she’d pretty much burned the whole “Slayer #2 Bridge” at the time.

Then, there’s Prison. Prison is about as routine and the same every day as one can get. It’s a lot of quiet time and self-reflection. Angel visited her, so there was the possibly bi-weekly “Pep” talk about how she could do it. There was also the fact that prison was still probably the better end of how her life could’ve ended up if she had never become a Slayer at all. I like to think, prison gave Faith a lot of perspective. It mellowed her out a bit, made her looser around the edges and more adaptable to the input of others. It shifted her focus from the near obsessive to a more rational and logical way of thinking. She saw the bigger picture for once, instead of how that picture should have her in the center of it. Because of that self-reflection, she stayed put. She didn’t use her strength or body to get herself out of there. She didn’t bail, because it was too hard and she didn’t start trouble because she wanted to eventually get out of there, if they would let her out. Because Murder Two, 25-Life doesn’t have to be life.

When she finally does get out of prison, it’s not for herself or her own reasons. In fact, Wesley tells her the situation and she bows out. She tells him that it’s something that Angel should take care of. It’s only when she hears that Angel is gone, that Angelus is around, that everything changes for her. She puts someone else in front of her own life, her own needs, and risks everything to give back to him that second chance that he gave to her in that alley.

She proves to be a leader, able to think tactically and with a sound rational to how Connor’s influence and state of mind isn’t going to help the mission. She flat-out admits that she’s a murderer, without even blinking. It’s part of who she is now, just like she’s a Slayer.

Everything that happened to her up to her turning herself in was a huge long line of events for Faith to look back on and realize how simple it would’ve been to just do things differently. It’s not that she regrets how her life has been, either, it’s that she just realizes what she could’ve had if she hadn’t tried to just take it. Because of that, all of her actions and motivations from that point forward are ones she’s trying to take to make up for her past. She’s using Angel as a role model and instead of continually looking back at the things she did that were wrong, she’s trying to make up for it by doing something right now.

She values her friends, even though there are very - very few of them at this point in her canon. She trusts Angel completely, adds Wesley to her list of people she needs to trust, but knows will take more than just a single mission for him to trust her and knows that Buffy is next up on her list to make amends, but she’s not going to shy away from her feelings this time. She’s very vocal about how she feels about being judged so quickly based on her past.

Background:

Wiki - http://buffy.wikia.com/wiki/Faith_Lehane

Before I get into her history I want to make mention of one thing regarding her home-life growing up.

Home-life for Faith growing up was pretty non-existent. There is a non-canon fiction piece that is supposedly a diary of her childhood that references dark themes but to a more specific outcome, but there are in-canon references such as “My dead mother hits harder than that.” or her discussion where she wanted a puppy, but her mother was always too drunk or passed out to notice her. These instances give enough detail into how much she actually cares about her family; ie: not a lot. It’s probable that she had a single parent home, with her mother partaking in more than just drinking and passing out around the house. Even with the path that her being Chosen took her on not being the smoothest, it’s probably still a better life than what she might have ended up with if she stayed in Boston.

There’s a lot of things that contribute to why Faith is the way she is, but with that non-canon fiction book (Malice) out there, I wanted to make sure that I addressed the fact that I don’t consider that to be part of her canon. There are enough in-canon references to suss out that Faith had a bad mom and a non-existent, possibly “mystery” donor of a dad.

-----

Faith had a rough childhood, surrounded by parents that probably didn’t care too much about her. When she was Chosen in 1998, she took the role of Slayer on, but didn’t exactly follow the book. When her watcher was killed, Faith bailed completely on the mess left at home and headed toward Sunnydale, where the “Buffy Summers” was still Slaying. Buffy was the legend, this iconic figure referenced by her old Watcher and Faith was just trying to get as far away from her past as she could. Her past followed her though, as it seems to always do, and her carelessness put her on the short-short list of people Watchers wanted to keep a very close eye on.

Through her beginnings as a Slayer, she failed to accept the guidance of a Watcher, took risks that were way above her training, involved Buffy in more than a few dangerous situations, and practiced a sort of vigilante method of Slaying. She was above the rules, because she was above the standard ‘human’ level of life. Stronger, faster, better was who she was and that meant she could do what she wanted. This of course led to trouble, law-breaking, murder, weighting a body and sinking it, more lying, a cover-up and then the eventual break-down and admission of guilt and wrong-doing. Which leads to the much-needed prison time where she works toward her redemption.

In prison, she follows the rules and for the most part she's the model prisoner. She wants to make good on her life, and uses Angel as the sort of role-model toward how to do redemption right. She knows she could escape at any point, because she has that much strength - but she sticks it out, fully intending to serve out her entire sentence. However, things get a bit tricky when Angel is manipulated into losing his soul. Angelus is free and Wesley recruits Faith to save the day. She breaks out of prison and follows Wes into the heart of all sorts of trouble. She easily grasps onto the old habits of Slaying, figures out how to trust Wes not to want revenge on her for the whole "tied up and tortured thing". She takes on her newfound leadership role, by bossing around Connor and sending him home when she realizes he wants revenge of a different kind. Then she does what she does best, take-charge completely in a "Move Over... I can do it better." fashion.

Special Abilities or Weapons:

Demon spirit/blood infused girl - Faith has been given the lineage of a Slayer. Passed down from Slayer to Slayer, Old Crusty Dudes that couldn't fight for themselves, pretty much set up a girl to be possessed by the spirit of a Demon, in order for her to be strong enough to fight against them. Over the years, it's been traced to some form of demon blood within their bodies. Almost like an extra bit of genetics that gets flipped on when they're activated.

Super strength, speed, agility, balance. Advanced hearing & sight - Much like the standard super-hero type, Faith can run faster (ie: catch up to a speeding vehicle), jump further (ie: between rooftops), Punch Harder (ie: she picked up what appeared to be about 200lbs on a bench-press bar as if it was a 5lb free-weight), and stay standing longer than the average fighter. The demon blood in her system, amps up her normal abilities, but she does still need to train in order to use them effectively. She doesn't like to train, but she realizes that it sort of helps to know how to duck so that you don't have to punch so often.

Wicked-awesome immune system and boosted healing abilities - The demon blood in her also gives her a leg up on the competition. She'll never catch a cold, never get sick and even if she gets shanked and falls off of a building she won't die - she'll just end up in a coma. Even from that she'll wake up and be ready to go rather quickly. In canon, she’s in a coma for a while and moves from the bed without any muscle fatigue or weakness. Cuts and scrapes heal in a day; more serious injuries take a few days. She'll limp, but she'll still be walking.

Translation - almost all of her abilities will be translated into Force related abilities. Healing will be lessened a bit, but I really don’t see her getting beat to the point of coma in game anyway, so it shouldn’t really come up.

Weapons wise - she's fond of knives but she'll have used most of her weapons during the fight before she shows up. So she's got nothing on hand.

Sect: Civilian

Job: She’ll figure something out.

Samples:

First Person:

[The video clicks on and there’s the face of a girl who has just gotten out of the shower. Hair wet and pulled back and from this angle the top of a white towel is easy to see. So are all the cuts and bruises across her features.]

As much as I fell in love with the shower head in that bathroom, I’m gettin’ the idea that missing out on a coma this time isn’t going to pan out into anything good.

[She’ll smirk, though that does crack the split of her lip a bit. Her fingertip touches to it, wincing slightly.]

Waking up in a strange bed, nearly stripped down, and still feelin’ the hurt of my last big brawl doesn’t seem like a dream sequence. I mean, for one, I’ve got all my senses. Aren’t dreams supposed to kick one of those off so I don’t want to live in there forever?

I’m good for a quick bit of info, then the directions to the way out.

Third Person:

Staring at the fence, just at the edge of the yard, Faith tried to let her eyes relax. She tried to let her head fit around the bars that were on the window, instead of just resting them against the concrete.

Such a waste. To think that after all this time, now, standing against the wall, listening to some high paid county-assigned shrink trying to tell her what she should be thinking about. Faith knew what she should be thinking about and it wasn't the Mayor's Aide anymore. It was about all the things she used to have. Hell, even the motel on the wrong side of Sunnydale was better than being in this hole.

The small white sink, that Faith knew she'd always leave a glob of toothpaste in the middle of. The TV, that never really got much of anything except static. The double bed, that had a few springs that wanted to get more familiar -- more intimate with her backside, more than a few times a night. The dusty curtains, that the one day she opted to open them -- fell right off the track, right off the wall, and onto a pile on the floor in a matter of moments, complete with a cloud of dust up in her nose and mouth. She laughed, because she wondered if she'd staked the damn things. The single piece of rope, she'd string from the one corner in the bathroom to the bar in the shower, in hopes of drying off the few things she'd wash in the sink. All those little things she practically loathed using, hated having, and never wanted to see again, now she longed for.

When she killed--

When she murdered Finch, the Mayor put her up in a practical palace of a loft. Wispy drapes, a giant bed with Egyptian cotton sheets, and all the clothes she'd ever want. It was a space to call her own and yet, now that she was here, standing in the one free moment she got that wasn't in the yard or in her cell, she wasn't thinking of the high rise apartment, she was thinking of that dingy hotel room.

"Faith? Did you hear me? Tell me something you miss... from the way things were before you made that mistake."

Turning her head, Faith's hair tangled up along the painted brick as her eyes met the woman's with as much coldness as she could find within herself, "Nothing. I don't miss any of it, and I'm pretty fuckin' sure none of it misses me."

Anything Else: Salt makes my nose itch.
