How was Les Mis.? I take it it didn't work well as a musical film either?

I didn't think it worked at all. I wanted to yell at the screen everytime they started singing! They wasted a lot of time with pretty blah songs rather than get to the meat of the story, I thought.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I felt about the play, too.

It's just not suited to be a musical at all. Leave what's amazing alone and don't pick, you know? The songs don't even do the story justice.

I agree. Some things work as a musical, some don't, and Les Mis. just feels wrong as one.

What was Marius like, though? I'm always curious how each version depicts his character.

Yes, there are some things that should just not be musicals.

Um, he had nonexistent character development for the most part and barely any worthwhile screentime. I kind of felt like Eddie Redmayne was so thrilled to be in the musical he didn't convey a whole lot of emotion or depth besides fanboy excitement. He did impress me with his performance of Empty Chairs, Empty Tables but otherwise I felt kind of annoyed at him for being so darn happy all the time. They didn't explain his backstory either so that didn't help.

Yikes, sounds terrible. I'll certainly be sticking to my Marius instead. ;)
