Author's Note:Takes place right after Jane teaches Maura to hold a gun. I’m in the process of finishing the other drabbles, forever apologizing for the delay! Sorry!

“Jane…?” Maura gripped the metal in her hand, throwing a look at the detective.

“Do I look badass?”

Jane chuckled, nodding as she took in the sight. A very prim and proper Maura Isles was sitting at the edge of her couch with the posture of some sort of princess or something- with a gun pinted at her front door. It was interesting, to say the least.

“Yeah, you look badass.”

Caramel locks bounced as the ME turned toward the door again, a smile on her face and gun at the ready.

Jane stood in the hallway, watching for a few moments as Maura sat perfectly still, an utterly adorable look of concentration on her face. The detective smiled to herself before treading softly to her bedroom for a few hours of sleep.

A commotion in the living room tore Jane from her sleep, causing her to grasp wildly for the gun in her bedside table, only to find that the gun was not longer there. A wave of panic shot through the detective before she remembered just where it was.

“Shut up!” the ME’s voice suddenly reverberated throughout the apartment, pulling Jane from her bed. She watched quietly as Maura gave Frost and Korsak a scolding, banishing them to opposite sides of the couch before turning to check on Jane.

The brunette scurried down the hall and slipped into her bed, snapping her eyes shut just as the ME tiptoed in.

“Jane?” Maura whispered into the room, slowly moving around Jane’s bed and sitting beside the detective.

“Mm…?” Jane mumbled, pretending to be asleep. She cracked one eye open, watching the ME’s silhouette settle beside her.

“we woke you, didn’t we? I’m sorry…” Maura whispered into the darkness, and sighed- she hadn’t meant to have such an outburst.

“Kinda- I was awake before you told them to shut up. You give a girl a gun…” Jane chuckled, shifting on her side to face Maura. She could almost make out the Me’s face as her eyes adjusted to the lack of light.

“I don’t usually lose my composure…I never raise my voice, Jane, but…”

“You’re ‘Badass Maura’ because you can hold a gun now?” Jane smiled, and the form beside her slapped her arm playfukly for the remark.

“No, not- not exactly. I just…when you’re involved, I tend to…I’m not sure, Jane. You’ve been under so much pressure lately. You’ve been so stressed, I wanted for you to have a chance to rest.”

The sincerity in Maura’s voice pulled at something in Jane, and she didn’t fight the impulse to reach out for the ME. A long, thin arm lay across Maura’s stomach tentatively, unsure of the smaller woman’s reaction.

“You don’t have to be a badass to help me sleep, Maura. Just staying here would help…” Jane had slept soundly the night that they had fallen asleep together, as though Maura’s presence alone was a calming force.

“Are you sure…?” Maura’s question was heavy, asking about more than just a friend’s company.

“Yeah, I’m sure…more than sure….” Jane’s voice faltered, diminishing into a shuddering breath before she forged on.

“…you don’t need to be holding a gun to make me feel safe, Maura. All you really have to do is be here…could you just…stay? Please?” the detective all but whispered, holding her breath for a few beats.

Maura slid down beside Jane, turning her back and allowing for a lanky body to curl around her. The detective’s arm held her securely, and Jane’s breath evened out calmly.

It was exhilarating to hold that gun, serving as a barrier between Jane and oncoming threats.

It was much more satisfying to act as an emotional barrier, however, and Maura was more than content to protect Jane in the comfort of the detective’s arms.
