Summary: Side-fic to “The Presence of Hope.” What was going through Kibum’s mind during those three weeks when he was in California.
'I’m not talking about you Bummie,''>
Week One…
This is for him. This is for him.
Those words kept circulating around in Kibum’s mind as he stared blankly out the window of the plane. He didn’t really want to go and travel for hours on a plane where he could do nothing but watch movies that came out recently. They helped to distract him, but the actor really wasn’t in the mood. There was always something he saw that reminded Kibum of him.
No matter what he did, his mind automatically traveled back to thoughts of his hyung with the voice of gold and those dark, twinkling eyes. Wait, he was doing it again.
Agitated, Kibum leaned his head back into the headrest of his chair. Maybe he could just get some sleep instead, he really ever dreamed anyways. Then he wouldn’t have to think about him anymore. He wouldn’t be in his mind anymore.
“Excuse me sir.”
The voice spoke just before Kibum’s eyes could close. The actor tilted his head to look at the stewardess.
“Hm,” he grunted, too tired to talk.
She smiled. “Would you like some tea or coffee?”
Kibum looked at the tall, gleaming pot that sat on top of the women’s cart. He watched as the steam rose up in the air causing a smiling face to materialize but then disappear into nothingness. His face fell.
Maybe forgetting wouldn’t be as easy as he thought.
Week Two...
A week had gone by, not that anything had changed. His training was going good, he guessed. His practice had been a little exhausting since one of the girls had a diva fit. This was one of the reasons why he liked staying in Korea. But his plan to try and forget about his hyung wasn’t working the way he thought he would. Sure he wasn’t always there in the dorm or at practices together, but that was the thing. Since he wasn’t always there, it just made Kibum think about him more and more. How was he doing? What was he doing? Was he eating alright? Did he even miss him?
Kibum let out a frustrated sigh and waved to doorman as he stepped through the doors of the apartment building. He was graciously given a room in a small but classy building during his stay in California. Hotels were always too dangerous for him to stay at since dedicated fans seemed to find him faster and were able to actually follow the young actor sometimes.
Taking slow steps, Kibum walked across the marble flooring and to the elevators. He pressed the button and began to wait for the elevator to come. He just really needed to go to bed. Sleep was his only escape from this madness. The actor stiffened as he felt his phone go off. Digging in his pocket, he pulled out his phone and looked at the caller ID. Sighing, he opened the button and put it to his ear.
“Hello?”
“Kibummie!” came a familiar yell.
Kibum looked up to see the doors open and he stepped inside. “Hello hyung,” he calmly replied as the doors closed and he pressed the button for his floor.
“Aw, is that the way you greet your favorite hyung?” Dong Hae complained.
“Who said you were my favorite hyung?” Kibum teased.
“Oh right,” Dong Hae said, mock evident in his voice. “Everyone knows who that is. Wait, except for one person. Him!”
Kibum sighed. “Did you call just to yell at me because of that?”
“Yes and no,” Dong Hae admitted. “Of course I missed you Bummie, but you know what you did was wrong. For both of you.”
The elevator dinged and the doors opened. “What’s done is done Hae.” The actor stepped out and onto the plush carpet of the hallway.
“But it can be fixed!” the dancer exclaimed. “I have a plan and everything. Wookie and Minnie even helped,” he added.
“How many people do you have on this project of yours?” Kibum asked.
He heard his hyung give a frustrated huff. “I told you,” Dong Hae said. “Everyone knows!”
Kibum fiddled for his keys. “So what, you guys hold daily meetings or something to discuss my love life?”
“We only did it once,” Dong Hae defended. “And this is serious Kibum. This isn’t good at all.”
The door clicked open and Kibum stepped inside. “I’m doing fine hyung.” He closed the door behind him. “You don’t have to worry so much.”
“I’m not talking about you Bummie,” Dong Hae softly stated.
Kibum stopped.
“It’s Yesung-hyung,” the older boy whispered. “He’s so sad.”
Kibum clenched the phone tighter. “He’s probably fine,” he gritted out.
“No Kibum,” Dong Hae replied. “He’s not. You should see him. He looks terrible, like he’s sick. He won’t even talk. Everyone’s so worried.”
The actor closed his eyes and his hand massaged his temple. “He’ll get better over it,” he said finally.
“Kim Kibum no he won’t!” Dong Hae protested. “If you don’t do something, he’ll just get worse. I thought you cared about him! I thought you lov-“
“Who do you think I’m doing this for Hae?” Kibum growled back.
“Running away from this isn’t going to help him, and it’s especially not going to help you. This is just…just…just a degradation of character!” Dong Hae yelled into the phone.
The younger boy scoffed. “Where did you learn such big words?”
“Kibum, I’m serious!”
“So am I,” he cut in. “So just drop it.” Kibum allowed for a few moments of silence to pass. “I’m tired. I’m going to take a nap now.”
“…Fine, be that way. But I’m not lying about anything, Kibum. Don’t wait until it’s too late.”
And the line went dead.

Kibum refused to answer his phone every time Dong Hae tried to call him. After a few days of numerous daily attempts, Ryeowook, Sungmin, even Eunhyuk tried calling him instead, but he knew what they all wanted to say and he really did not want to hear it. He even refused to talk to Heechul.
Kibum didn’t know to feel after the incident. He was angry and confused at the sometime. He wished that everyone would just leave him alone. Kibum didn’t leave just because he felt like it, he had his reasons. He left to save Yesung, to save him from himself. Kibum didn’t feel worthy enough, didn’t feel like he earned something as honorable as being with his hyung. He wouldn’t feel right until he worked hard and reached a level that was acceptable. And Kibum didn’t even know if that was even possible.
With his head in his hands, Kibum ignored his phone vibrating, another call no doubt.
Another week passed and the calls just stopped completely.
Week Three...
“Did you hear about Super Junior?”
“I know it’s horrible.”
Kibum kept his head low, pulling his cap down more to hide his face. He just needed some drinks really bad, but he couldn’t help but overhear the fangirls at the cashier next to him.
“They said that Kibum was visiting family, but he’s been gone for almost three weeks now.”
“Do you think he’s, you know here?”
“Like we would ever see him.”
Kibum couldn’t help but smile a little.
“That’s true, but did you see the other members?”
“You’re right. I was watching some of their videos. They all look so exhausted. Especially Yesung-oppa.”
Kibum couldn’t help but freeze at the mention of the name. Hyung?
“Did you see the one where he almost fell off the stage? He just looked like he was going to pass out. Thank goodness someone caught him before he did.”
The actor gripped the bottle in his hand tighter.
“I know! But if you look at the pictures, he has dark circles and everything. I don’t understand why he looks so bad though. Everyone else doesn’t look as bad.”
“Maybe he’s sick. Come on let’s go, I think a new video’s going to be on in a few minutes.”
“Yeah, hopefully they’ll look better. Excuse me, sir.”
Kibum looked at the girl he bumped into. “Sorry.”
Both of the girls’ eyes widened. “Eh you’re…”
Kibum smiled for them. “Thank you.” And then he ran, drinks far from his mind.

As soon as he got into his room, Kibum opened up his laptop and searched for the latest Super Junior video. It took a few minutes for it to load, Kibum’s heart pounding. He really hoped those girls were wrong, that it wasn’t that bad.
He held his breath as he clicked the ‘play’ button. The screen focused on the hosts for few seconds before the camera went to focus on the stage. The music came through the speakers and Kibum’s eyes tried to scan and find one particular person. As the song started, the camera changed views a few times, making Kibum become more confused. But soon, the one person he was looking for came on the screen and the sight made his heart drop.
The girls in the store hadn’t been lying. His voice might’ve been fine like always, but even through all of his training, Kibum saw the tired look and way his hyung dragged his body around on the stage. His face gave it away even more. The smile that usually graced his face was fake, not reaching his eyes at all. Those eyes, the once bright and twinkling eyes were now fatigued and dull, no life radiating from them.
The actor clicked the ‘pause’ button as a close up of the singer came up. Slowly, Kibum raised a shaky hand to the screen. As if he was right there, his finger grazed the screen.
“Yesung,” he croaked out, chest tight and confined. He couldn’t believe it. They were all right. His hyung wasn’t better. He was hurting, all because of him.
The actor couldn’t take it anymore. He leaped up from his seat and looked around the room frantically. Spotting his phone, Kibum quickly grabbed the electronic device. Kibum scrolled through his contact list as fast as he could. He hastily pressed the ‘call’ button and put the device to his ear. The phone rang a few times.
There was a yawn at first. “Hello?”
“Hae,” Kibum immediately said into the phone.
“Kibummie?”
Kibum stared back at the screen where the image of his hyung still was. “Do you really think I can fix this?”
“What? Fix what? Slow down I’m so sleepy,” Dong Hae mumbled.
“I want to hear your plan,” the younger boy said.
Kibum could hear the smile finally forming on his hyung’s face. “I knew you would come around. My plans are always the best.”
