Heechul was worried, and this time it wasn’t for his own well-being.
It wasn’t to say that Heechul was selfish, not at all. He just grew up in an environment where most people were capable and independent; they wouldn’t need help, and even if they did, asking for help was never an option. So Heechul grew up being told to worry only about himself, because that’s the only person he needed to be concerned with. And that’s how Heechul lived, until now.
Training wasn’t as easy and people made it seem to young children who dreamed of becoming big stars and appearing on TV. Oh no, it was all work and practices and discipline. Their breaks weren’t long, but they were cherished by those who were dying from exhaustion. Heechul didn’t want to seem weak or anything, but he could hardly lift his arms without wincing. But he considered himself lucky, others got injured far worse. He heard a kid all the way from China even broke his arm and didn’t even realize it until it started growing back curved. That’s how accustomed to working while ignoring the pain these kids had become.
It was sad, how hard everyone would work, how much pain they would be put through just in hopes of getting to debut sometime soon. But then again that was something that should only be given to those who sincerely deserved it.
And that’s just the type of person Heechul was concerned about. He watched as Jungsoo sat slumped against the wall of the room. There were circles around his eyes which he managed to cover using make-up, but Heechul knew they were there. The older boy’s body swayed and drooped with fatigue from all the extra practices he had been putting in when he should have been asleep.
‘The idiot,’ Heechul thought to himself with a frown. He couldn’t understand why the older boy felt that he needed to put more effort into everything, he was perfect in everything already. But that didn’t stop Jungsoo from practically killing himself from stress and all the work he was being put through.
‘He needs to get away from all of this before he kills himself,” Heechul thought. All of the sudden, the boy’s head snapped up in an epiphany. Grabbing a few coins from his wallet, he ran out of the room throwing a ‘be right back, don’t miss me too much’ over his shoulder. Navigating his way through the hallways, Heechul came to the pay phone open to the trainees. After inserting the coins, his fingers flew across the keypad, pressing the memorized numbers.
“Hello?”
“Hey, it’s Heechul,” the boy responded into the phone he cradled to his face. “Listen noona, I have a favor.”

Jungsoo stretched his arms as he walked from the bathroom to his room. The cold shower helped relax all of his muscles which were painfully sore from one of his late night practices the night before. He knew that today was their one day off in a while, something about the trainers having a special party, but Jungsoo was determined to put in some more practice time. That way, he could be ahead of the others.
Smiling to himself, he opened his door and was surprised at what he found on the other side. There, on his nice, neat bed, sat a cross-legged Heechul, flipping through a magazine.
“Heechul-ah?” Jungsoo called out, slightly confused by the boy’s presence. Heechul was usually one of the people who would sleep the whole morning away when they had a day off. He was wondering what on earth would cause the young boy to be up at 6 am.
The said boy looked up at his hyung, an annoyed look on his face. “Well it’s about time you got back! I was waiting here for five whole minutes!” Heechul exclaimed while climbing off the bed, carelessly tossing the magazine onto a desk.
Jungsoo twitched at the sight of his pristine bed wrinkled before he was pulled away by the wrist.
“Come on~ Wake up! You’re usually the one who’s wide awake and unaffected by getting up so damn early,” Heechul ranted as he pulled the older boy out of the room and down the corridor.
“Are we going to get breakfast?” Jungsoo asked, confused by his dongsaeng’s antics.
Heechul stopped and turned around to face Jungsoo with his hands on his narrow hips. “No, we’re going somewhere special. But it’s a surprise. Now stop whining.”
And with that, Heechul grabbed onto the older boy’s thin wrists once again and led Jungsoo. He just rolled his eyes at the younger boy’s attitude; he knew how crabby Heechul could be when he didn’t get his sleep. But Jungsoo wondered as they walked as to what this so-called surprise was.
He just hoped it had nothing to do with shopping.

Jungsoo stared at the awning of the store Heechul had stopped at.
‘Ha-Neul’s Pet World’
Pulling his hyung to the door before he could say anything, Heechul took a key out of his pocket and opened the front door. A little bell chimed, announcing their presence to the empty store.
Hesitant, Jungsoo just stood at the entrance while Heechul disappeared somewhere to the back of the store. Looking around, the trainee saw the litter of posters of various decorating the walls of the store. Many boxes and cages lay around the store, all covered with a thin, white sheet. It was obviously a pet shop, but it made Jungsoo wonder just what the younger boy would want to do in a place like this? It seemed so out of character for Heechul.
“Oi.”
Jungsoo turned around at the sound and faced Heechul who was waiting at the doorway.
“Come on, don’t waste any time,” Heechul called, motioning with his hands.
Jungsoo obediently, but cautiously, walked to his dongsaeng and followed him through the dim corridor. After watching Heechul’s head for a minute or so, Jungsoo soon heard a familiar sound. Peering around the younger boy’s shoulder, Jungsoo’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Are those…,” he began, eyes glued to the sight in front of him.
Heechul rolled his eyes. “Dogs. You know four legs, hairy, sniff at everything, pee on anything they can reach.”
Jungsoo stepped forward and looked into the pen. They weren’t dogs. They were puppies. Four adorable little puppies who all seemed to be of the same mix and litter with white fur blotched with bits of brown here and there, running around in circles and playing around with each other. He turned to the other boy.
“Well go on,” Heechul said. He continued to lightly, by his standards, push the older boy towards the pen.
Smiling, Jungsoo lifted his legs over the barrier and into the stall. He crouched down and his smile grew as the puppies took notice of the new arrival and came bounding to him. Sniffing cautiously, one of the braver puppies jumped up and put its front paws on the trainee’s shirt. Jungsoo gently began to scratch behind the puppy’s ears, causing its siblings to come closer. After a few moments, the puppies were completely comfortable with the boy and were tugging on a chew toy Jungsoo had found.
Heechul smiled to himself as he watched the older boy act so genuinely relaxed and carefree. His work was done. Leaning his head back, Heechul closed his eyes.
“Heechul-ah!” One of Heechul’s eyes opened to see Jungsoo grinning as he carried one of the puppies in his arms.
“What?” came his reply.
“I just wanted to say ‘thank you,’” the older boy said softly.
“Yeah, yeah it’s no big deal,” Heechul said, brushing off the words of gratitude. “You just needed to take some time off from all the work and my noona didn’t mind.”
“It means a lot that you care, Heechul-ah,” Jungsoo admitted, a gentle smile gracing his lips. “You want to come in?”
Heechul had to stop himself from grimacing. He had meant what he said before because dogs weren’t exactly his favorite animals. He preferred cats. But as he looked at the cheerful face his hyung held on his face, Heechul realized it would be wrong to decline his request.
He pushed himself off of the wall. “Fine,” he said as he walked over, “but if they do something gross, I’m blaming you.”
Jungsoo just laughed and handed the puppy he was holding to the younger boy. Heechul hesitantly took the young animal and held it to his eye level. The puppy just wagged its tail and barked at the familiar face.
‘Maybe this wasn’t all that bad,’ Heechul thought to himself as he cautiously rubbed the puppy’s little head with his finger. That was until he felt something leaking onto his feet.
“Aish!” Heechul put the puppy down and shot up while looking at his feet. "You peed on my shoes!”
Afterwards, all that could be heard was Jungsoo’s contagious laughter ringing throughout the store and a furious Heechul yelling.

A/N: I got this idea after watching “A Walk to Remember” - the Suju one, not the Mandy Moore one. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, look it up on Youtube and watch it, every fan should. But be warned, have a box of Puffs (they’re so soft~) handy. I was actually first going to make it a fanfic where the two of them are fighting, but I figured this would be better. Leaving love is always appreciated, even if it’s tough love. <3
