A Big Hunk of Nobody Cares
Well, I've seen several various posts lately on various LJs, which showed that many people have a vehement dislike of Angel. I personally like Angel, and I'd like to write an essay on why I like him. Problem is, I'm shooting blind, here. I can guess at reasons why folks don't like him, but I'd like to know what takes the cake. In fact, I'm sure

I finally opted for he has a hero complex but I also hated how he weakened Buffy every time they were together. She never could reach her potential with him. What I really hated most about Angel was his overblown sense of knowing what is right and running over anyone and anything that tried to do differently. He did this with Buffy especially making the decision to leave the way he did (and telling her she should look for normal), the way he tossed away his chance to be that normal for her without saying a word to her. He often withheld information from the gang if it was in his interests to do so. He did the same with his AI team. He made decisions "for" everybody in his life, often without getting their input....in short he "always knows best" and it is not always the case. He plows on ahead no matter the cost (Drogyn) if he thinks he is right...and he ALWAYS thinks he is right.
The part of me that doesn't like him because of his interaction with Spike is in addition to the general above:
I didn't like his withholding important info on Spike in S5 (like the soul and what Spike had really done in the hell mouth). I hated that he wouldn't encourage Fred to make him corporeal (I mean did Fred actually serve a purpose in hunting down Nina???). He was petty even in face of the changes in Spike.
He was always more "honest" and interesting as Angelus IMHO.
Angel was as flawed but never would see that in himself. He was arrogant.
