S8 Comics-- Issue #36

So yeah, I realize I'm way behind, and I didn't read anyone's thoughts on this issue.  In fact, I just read it.  There were some things that stuck out in my mind as interesting, curious, off putting or just plain yucky.

Thanks to Emmie for the screencaps.

So...

So, first things first--Joss decides to have Angel regress.  He's seen first hand what can happen when one is offered the option of becoming a "higher being"--or does Cordelia just not matter in this universe?  People and demons are known for tricking folks for their own ulterior motives, using words like "purpose" and "chosen" and "reward," and Angel knows this.  Cept this ain't Angel--this is some pod character that vaguely resembles Angel aesthetically and has the same name in comic form.

This is not the character I love, who just decides to up and forget everything that has happened.

And here, even more fruit from the poisoness tree is offered, and of course, Buffy's life is on the line.  Yeah, except when isn't it?  The real Angel has been here several times--Buffy's life is almost always in danger, and there isn't much of anything he can ever do to stop it.  He can't babysit her, and he stopped trying to once he offically moved away from Sunnydale.  So now some other being that hops from body to body tells him that shits about to get dire (again) and that he can save her with his awesome new reward and ability to fly and he just goes along with it?  Srsly?

So, Buffy faces off with Twangel--is in close contact with him--and still doesn't know it's Angel until the mask if off. [And let me say, could his face look any creepier here?]  And then over here--

All Spike has to do is look at him, and he knows it's Angel.  He knows Angel so well, even though he's clearly flying in that pic (and I'm assuming that Angel couldn't fly last time he saw him), that all he has to do is look.  What does that say?  What does it mean?

Perhaps this is my Spangel bias talking, but to me, it says Spike's so in tune with him and knows his body so well that the mask and stuff didn't matter a lick.

So, this isn't news.  Spike takes the backseat.  Once upon a time, Spike was in her heart.  But who cares cause Angel owns her heart, and Spike owns...a ship.  How useful.  Oh wait--convenient.

Can't say I'm surprised.

So Spike's not only convenient and useful, we can also throw "simple" into the ring of ways Buffy describes him in this issue.  Buffy describes that day as the "weirdest, bestest, weirdest best day" of her life because of Angel, who steered enemy fire away from her or something that involved killing other slayers and parading around in a mask as her enemy.

And the space sex--fucked her right into a new existence.  How neat.

Angel's jealous, and Buffy tells him that he has nothing worry about.  "That's beneath you, baby."  Yech.  Major ick on that line.

Okay, so Buffy thanks him for saving them all from the ubervamps, and then goes on to add a "sorry" for not having been in touch.  So...she knew he was alive then?  Alright.

The "bonk (which should be "boink," right?) the bad guy" line didn't make much sense to me, since Angel wasn't evil or whatever when they first had sex, and hey, neither was Spike.  Riley was dull, not evil, and Parker ended up being a douche after the fact as well.  Meh.  Also, Spike does realize he includes himself in that statement, right?  Which makes it further not make any sense.  But then we learn about Spike's "sizable package," which is really not news at all.  Well, it wasn't.  No guy with a small one parades around naked that much.  Also, his walk pretty much said "big dick."  Well, it did, damn it.

...and then Spike has all the answers.  If there's something vague and obscure that needs searching out or a solution to a complicated problem, I'd believe that Spike could find it and the answers.  He's been good for that before, what with finding his own soul, figuring out what that worm demon was, finding a way to defeat the necromancer, the cure for Drusilla, etc.  Still, it makes Giles pretty useless about now.

So...the Master's back?  Anyone following the comics closer than I am care to explain that one?
