Started road tripping around the South yesterday!
Gotta keep this short.
The heat and humidity is oppressive. Good god.
The cicadas hatched last month and the disgusting little creatures are fucking EVERYWHERE. Do you know about those? Look them up if you don't. As much as they freak me out, the scientist in me is kind of marveling at the fact that I was actually able to see them. They're kind of like a biological lunar eclipse.
We went to Grand Ole Opry, and I stood center stage. Johnny Cash stood there. Elvis stood there. Paul fucking McCartney stood there! Holy shit! That was a piece of music history!
We also went to the Dukes of Hazzard museum. I have never seen so many confederate flags in my life. They were plastered onto purses and stickers like Hello fucking Kitty or something. That was my second big moment of culture shock.
Joe and I then went to downtown Nashville. Jimmy Buffett was playing a concert last night and whole parts of downtown were blocked off as, like, I guess, a pre-party for his concert. I'm AMAZED by Nashville. EVERY. SINGLE. BAR. Has live music. And it wasn't all just country. I had never seen anything like it.
We also went line dancing at a bar called the Wild Horse Saloon. And you know what? I LIKED IT!
From Nashville, we drove to Chattannooga, and that's where we are now, it a dumpy little hotel that smells like cigarettes and an A/C unit that probably hasn't worked in 20 years. We're going to this place called Rock City (they're like...caves, or something), and then we're going to Hotlanta and hitting the Coca-Cola bottling company, seeing a drive in movie, going to Richard Blaise's restaurant (you know, that guy who won Top Chef All Stars), and hitting some bars.
I love it down here. I'm sad I'm going to be leaving.
