Myshuno Prompt: First day of school Characters: Isabetta, Moria, Olivia and Asher Norrington Notes: spoilers, behind the scenes in Guilford Word Count: 938
I loved the Anne of Green Gables reference. I'm willing to bet money that Betta will marry Jamie Prescott :P Or maybe not...are they closely related? Wait, I suppose it doesn't matter; not during this time period.
This was another one of those instances where my modern self cringed, but my logical self whose read enough history knows that this was how teachers dealt with problems: they struck the students' hands with a ruler. Hell, they don't do it nowadays anymore, but Keith (who is almost 40) went to a Catholic school and he remembered nuns hitting the kids, so corporal punishment in school wasn't THAT long ago. And if any of the kids complained to their parents about it, then the kid would be punished at home because they caused the nun problems. Which sort of looks like what Asher and Olivia did here: they punished Betta (though not as drastically).
i just knew that etta was the fiery redhead to pull a "ann of green gables" :) she and jamie? i'll have to chew on that lol
i hated having the teacher hit her too. and i wanted to focus on the family's reaction to it. quite like in "little women". both olivia and asher are furious at the teacher's actions but they live in a time when little can be done about it. they don't strike their children but popular opinion is in the teacher's favor. they have to reluctantly discipline etta for her behavior yet they feel her punishment at the teacher's hands was undeserved. she's being disciplined for losing her temper, not for upsetting her school master. i imagine that should mr pringle lay a hand on her again, asher will tear down the school at worst and withdraw his daughter at best.
